Greetings Spiceheads and Pepperpunks!

I just wanted to take a minute and remind everyone of a couple features we have at our hands, tips, clicks, and… idk… snips for you crab people… (#Igotnothing)

At any rate, I have noticed a steep decline in the usage of three things.

Helpful post selector; Used to mark a post that has inched you closer to completion of that ticket or issue, or a post that has helped lead others or given hints tips and ideas to the OP and others.

Best answer selector; This is a magic button. This button not only archives the fix for you, but helps future searchers find the answers much faster. This button should be used E’RY TIME you ask a question and have a resolution, if not from the boards, please link and share your results you can’t mark your own best answer if I recall**, but at least we will know.

Discussion vs Question selector; This is almost as important as the best answer question. If you are waxing philosophical, Complaining about users, vendors, or pesky bosses, or Simply want to test the waters for “Who’s the best at thing” This is a switch that you want to make to help keep things organized.

While we as a community have common interest, shared perspective (users… duh…) and many other fun things to chat about, Spiceworks as an open forum for IT folk and us IT folk should also take the time to help organize and complete the system with the tools we have been provided by the amazing spice works folks. So remember mark your answer helpful questions and set topics as discussions when appropriate!

Edit**: You CAN Set your own BA, however you don’t get points, I thought this was the case but couldn’t remember. Thanks for the clarification @starg33ker

100% agreed… New SW users should be tested on this thoroughly before they are allowed to post. Is there a way we can shock people who don’t do this? #notjoking

Thanks for posting this! I agree that helpful posts are not being awarded as they should.

You can award yourself a BA, you just won’t receive points.

AMEN! A single spicy pepper isn’t enough for this, but yes! Everyone should know about and DO this automatically!

Awesome, I thought you could just wasn’t sure if I were crazy!

How abouts letting Admins mark a BA if they realise a post has been left a month or so? (OPTIONAL of course!)

You could bug @julia-lockin

i believe they already have that ability to do so.

Yes. Thank you. it bugs me SO MUCH when OPs have had dozens of replies on a topic and no HPs, and no BA. Very annoying.

Awesome re-cap of what we should all be doing… now where’s that Best Answer button again?

Technically a mod or a Group Admin can mark a BA/HP at any time. They can also convert discussions into questions and vice versa (I’ve done so with this to prove a point  )

If it’s been a while and you feel an answer you’ve given is deserving of a BA/HP then give the Group Admin a nudge.

And by a while I don’t mean 3 hours. Anyone whining about not having a BA/HP marked in a short space of time will get struck of the Xmas card list.

Similarly, if a BA/HP has been awarded and you think it’s unfair (e.g. you posted the answer, OP replies with “that worked” and gives themselves the BA) then raise it with the Group Admin/Community Managers/Moderators (in that order)

Also don’t forget that the OP (Original Poster) will be getting messages from Spiceworks stating that need to mark BA/HP.

I really try to mark them. I have one question sitting open right now that isn’t answered yet, and I’m torn between selecting a good-but-not-great answer and no answer at all. I hate cheating people out of the satisfaction of getting a wee bit of recognition for a great answer.

Edit: I also have to say - “crab people” is always a good substitute… in a pinch.

You can give the answer an HP. So, recognition but also hinting at the fact that it hasn’t been nailed yet.

Not to rain on your parade but wasn’t this topic originally for discussion? It was a general FYI, not a question. There were questions asked by posters, not the OP himself, yet the answers to those questions were marked as HP and BA.

Lately I receive many new users bogus, “dirty” our feed with boring advertising meaningless.

Remember all that you can use any denunciation to banhammer.

It is that little square anonymous at the top right, the second option which reads:

What is wrong with this post?

- Promotional post from a non-Spiceworks Partner

- Rude and unfriendly post

- Irrelevant post

- Other

I would assume those that need to know are the ones least likely to post in WC. I.e. not regular’s, though I maybe wrong…

I don’t worry about the OP marking BA/HP as much as just not responding. The mods take care of marking answers, but when the OP doesn’t ever come back to the thread, no one knows what happened.

As I said in my reply, this was to prove a point (to everyone in the thread) that their suggestions about what can be done, can be done.

I have also undone that (to prove a point).

I was just searching a solution to a problem that I had. I found a similar post, and found the answer to my problem in the thread, no BA and no HPs. I commented thanking the person with the answer to my problem and that he should get the BA. It was probably an old post so I doubt anyone will go back and change it.

If there is not a BA on a post I usually check the last few posts in the thread for people thanking the person with the answer, before I try reading through an entire thread.
