Greetings, fellow IT professionals and Star Wars enthusiasts!

In a galaxy not so far away, we at Malwarebytes have been pondering on how to combine our two favorite things in the universe: security and lightsabers. And so, we came up with a challenge for you: If you were a Star Wars character, what IT advice would you give?

Here’s what we got:

Blue Team Jedi Masters :star2: - These are the wise, disciplined, and vigilant IT professionals who adhere to the principles of the Light Side. They possess exceptional skills in network defense, malware protection, and data recovery. As guardians of cybersecurity, Jedi Masters focus on proactively securing systems, monitoring potential threats, and maintaining the integrity of data.

IT Jedi advice: “Always pass on what you have learned.” - Yoda

Red Team Sith Lords :zap: - These cunning and ambitious individuals represent the Dark Side of the IT world, but with a twist. As ethical hackers or penetration testers, they exploit vulnerabilities, test security measures, and attempt to breach systems. Their deep understanding of IT systems and offensive tactics can be invaluable for developing robust security measures, helping organizations identify and fix vulnerabilities before malicious actors can exploit them.

IT Sith advice: “If you only knew the power of the Dark Side.” - Darth Vader

Now it’s your turn! Share your IT advice as a Star Wars character and join the ranks of the Jedi Masters or Sith Lords in the comments below.

:rocket: GIVEAWAY ALERT :rocket:

To make things even more exciting, we’re giving away 50 exclusive Star Wars-inspired Malwarebytes t-shirts to participants! Just post your Star Wars character IT advice in the comments, and you’ll be automatically entered for a chance to win.

  1. One entry per person.
  2. Entries will be accepted until 11:59 PM PDT on 5/10.

I started as a young Jedi apprentice, but have ended up as a Sith Lord.

Everybody eventually turns to the dark side - it’s more fun .

Does this mean that Mace Windu was a purple teamer?

I think that Rogue One and A New Hope show that when hacking you should encrypt your sessions, and use proxies to limit the Empire’s ability to trace a transmission. Also, backup by sending to multiple sites, if possible.

As for quotes:

“The ability to speak does not make you intelligent” - Qui-Gon Jinn (or me thinking of users)

“A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack” - Yoda

“When you look at the dark side, careful you must be, for the dark side looks back” - Yoda

“I am altering the deal, pray I do not alter it further” - Darth Vader (and software companies, sorry)

“Never tell me the odds” - Han Solo (and many blue teams under attack)

And I have to include the classic:

“Do or do not, there is no try” - Yoda

When a user asks for permissions to access something new in the system - “I have a bad feeling about this”

When you’ve helped a user resolve their issue and they say “I love you” simply respond “I know” and walk away…

You will know when you are calm, at peace, passive. A Tech uses the the Spiceworks Community for knowledge and defense, never for attack.

Just when I think I have achieved the level of IT Jedi Master I get hit with some off the wall oddball IT issue and BOOM! I am a Padawan again.
IT Jedi advice: Much to learn you still have.

And Back that thing up!

may the phish and malware stay away from you.

If I were Grand Moff Tarkin, I would say “Don’t ignore a known security risk.” That is, if I weren’t already dead from ignoring a known security risk.

put up the starship and reboot

Documentation, maintain it, you must. In the future, save time and prevent confusion, it will.

Use the force you must, to keep things running properly

MalwareBytes your system. This is the way.

Do, or do not - there is no “try”.

That’s the IT SW advice that works every day.
