Hi , Today I was reading an ESET article on Threatsense Parameters when I saw: “I change the parameters to always scan runtime packers” What does this mean? Does Threatsense Parameters always scan selected locations?

Note: This was a post on the Site for the ESET Endpoint edition, but Does this apply to ESET Smart Security Premium as well?

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

Hello,

A runtime packer is a program that encapsulates another program to compress and/or obfuscate it. The former is usually done to reduce the size of the file (less meaningful in an era of pervasive broadband and storage measured in terabytes), while the latter is usually done to make a program more difficult to analyze by reverse-engineering its code.

Examining runtime-packed files can increase the overhead (time and memory usage) of security software due to the additional analysis being performed, so it is likely some security programs have this functionality enabled and disabled in various places throughout themselves so as to not impact system performance and responsiveness.

As to what sort of effect this has on your computers’ performance, you’ll need to be the judge of that, as it is going to vary for each of them.

Hi

What if I select runtime packer from threat sense parameters and boot sectors/UEFI to scan even if we open the places I have shown in this screenshot, won’t the threatsense parameters always scan them like real-time file protection scans computer files (game files, etc.)?

{"@type":"Person
spiceuser-yp225
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/spiceuser-yp225"}},{"@type":"Answer

Hello,

I would suggest contacting ESET’s support for a definitive answer in how to configure their software.
