In all honesty they are probably bigger than needed for what they are used for but is it really a bad thing to have for you backups? Guess it’s nice to have if you have the budget.

Before my appliance refresh in December we were at the top of the yellow with spikes into the red and suffered from some performance issue. We signed up for the maintenance contract with a current hardware refresh and a future hardware refresh in 3-5 years program that Unitrends had advertised so I am confident that we will not be having any major backup issues for the foreseeable future. Here are my system loads over the last month on my 4 appliances.

Looking good. Every now and then mine jumps to the mid-high yellow, but not too worried. It has been smooth sailing since our switch.

That’s awesome, but what are you doing with the 4 separate appliances? Are they local backup targets for individual locations, or is there a mix of backup/replication?

I’ve seen occasional units run in the upper yellow 24/7 without any issues to speak of, but I certainly wouldn’t want a fresh unit that loaded!

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing these details. If anyone reading this has questions about what you’re seeing, please let me know.

They are each used for local backups and cross replication. We also do Archiving to disk at Site A and bringing offsite to a different branch.

  • Site 1 - Local servers backed up to 823 and replicated to Site 2 813R
  • Site 2 - Local server(s) backed up to 813B and replicated to Site 1 823
  • Site 3 - Local server(s) backed up to 312 and replicated to Site 1 823

Appliance 823 that is sized to hold more history because this is our main site and houses our local physical and VM backups. It also is a replication destination for Appliance 813B and 312

Appliance 813R is only a replication destination for Appliance 823 (get it, R for replication).

Appliance 813B is only a backup target and replicates to 823 (get it, B for backup).

Appliance 312 is only a backup target and replicates to 823.

HOLY STORAGE BATMAN!

How much storage space are you using and what do you do to backup your backups?

We have D2D2D setup with an Archive chassis attached via 4 e-sata. That we offload weekly. We have about 3tb of freespace

Mine has dropped a lot, since we got rid of Exchange and the email arching that went with it. It still spikes at times, but most of those are when it’s arching to eSATA.
