SpiceWorks only lets me associate a device to ONE owner, so I read up on creating a custom attribute in order to add an additional field which I was hoping would enable me to associate devices to more than one user. The reason I want to do this is because we have some machines that are shared by a dozen or more users on any given day. Many times, one user will only ever work at 2-3 different computers in the course of their employment with us. So it’d be nice to be able to associate 2 or more devices to multiple users. This makes it much easier to remotely support them when they call.

I’ve attached a screenshot of what I’d like to accomplish. I’ve created a custom attribute field with the following settings:

Name = Other Associated Devices

Type = Text

Default Value = ,

Applies To = Person

In Portal? = (unchecked)

When I go into a user’s profile in “People”, the custom attribute field is not showing up.

What am I doing wrong?

1 Spice up

Hi Shuey,

From the people record you should be able to add multiple devices without a custom attribute. I’ve attached a screen shot.

Custom attributes are more like free text entry fields, they won’t be able to directly link to the inventory. Does this help explain what you’re seeing?

Thanks for the reply Aaron.

The problem is that, once I associate a device with one user, I am no longer able to associate it with any other user :(. Is there an alternative?

Oh I misunderstood and had your goal reversed. You’re right that there isn’t a way to associate a device to multiple people.

But for reporting/informational purposes then the custom attribute should work out. It’d just be a text entry of the PC name rather than directly linking to the device in inventory.

The screenshot I enclosed is a mockup I made of what I was hoping to accomplish - I haven’t actually accomplished it yet, lol.

I can’t get the custom attribute to show up in the People section of SpiceWorks for any user…

Any ideas? =\

Ah, that was a mock :slight_smile:

At Settings > Advanced & International is the custom attribute applied to person? That’s something that I’ve overlooked before when creating custom attributes. It seems like it should be showing up, this is what you should see:

Here’s how mine is configured

Hey Aaron, thank you again for your help with this. I think I just learned another new thing about SpiceWorks: When I make changes/additions, I may not see them right away and need to give the system time to update. I just went back into the People section and tried looking at a user and the custom attribute is showing up finally.

Thanks again!

That’s a little weird, it would take some time to populate, but I would have expected it to happen sooner! Glad that it’s sorted out now :slight_smile:
