I need a 48 port gigabit switch with POE. This is for small site of about 30 users.

We’ve historically used Cisco but I want to at least consider others going forward. I’ve been looking at the Ubiquiti Edgemax line and that is a possibility.

I was also looking at HP line but to be honest they seem to have so many models that I can’t tell what’s current and what may be old/discontinued. The office connect 1820 48g POE lotks like it would fit my need but something makes me think this is old and no longer supported line. Is the Procurve line the current models that they are selling?

Does anyone have a good source where I could get HP gear?

I’m open to considering other vendors besides Ubiquiti and HP as well.

How many watts of poe power do you need?

Known needs at the time is 175W but I’d like about double that for some future growth. Something between 300W to 500W should be sufficient.

For the basics take a look at the HPE 1950-48G-2SFP±2XGT-PoE+

Fiberstore has been growing on me recently, they have some pretty good products.

You already mentioned Ubiquiti. I’d also look at Dell’s switches. I’ve had good luck with the PoE models in the past.

If you are used to Cisco, then don’t go with HP 1800s or 1900s, you will find them pretty awful.

A 2500 HP would be OK.

The HP/Aruba 2530 series are solid layer 2 switches. You can even get them in POE+. If 10G connectivity is a requirement you would want the 2930 series with SFP+ ports. CDW or SHI would be a good resource to purchase.

I would look at Dell, Juniper, or FortiSwitch from FortiNet.

Hi Jay,

Have you used the chat functionality on cdw.com yet? It should appear on the bottom when you visit the site. One of our reps would be happy to assist you in finding the right switch. Let me know if I can also help in any way.

I have always had good results from Netgear TBH. Very rare for one to fail and if they do they get it swapped out quickly.

We have about 40 netgear switches installed in an enterprise environment and have been pleased with their performance.

We are replacing our Cisco 2960s with Dell N3000P or N2000P switches, depending on whether we need layer 3 or not. Cheaper, and you don’t need a contract to update the firmware.

Edit: also, the CLI is very similar to Cisco so not that hard to migrate.

The last time I replaced switches I went with the Netgear ProSafe line. They were easy to use and worked great (as long as you save the config…but that’s another story).

Any requirements on the networking side e.g. VLAN’s, STP etc.?

Depending on features and budget there is are options at NETGEAR for 48 Port POE switch with no management, L2 Web Managed, L2+ Web Managed, Cloud Managed and L3 Fully Managed.

You can use our Product Selector to input requirements and output available switches.

If it’s only the one check out the GC752TX , you can manage it locally and via the Insight App for free which can come in handy.

Feel free to tag me if you have any questions around products now or in the future.

right now i use Brocade do not really like them i am testing unifi 48 500w this sunday when the office is closed i only have 3 vlans so i am hoping i can get it to work.

The big plus is no license or maint yearly payment…

If you’re up for other suggestions, might I suggest the following?

Consider this a “Good - Better - Best” lineup.

Good: DGS-1210-52MP 24 Ports 10/100/1000Mbps PoE + 4 SFP Web Smart Switch

Better: DGS-1510-52XMP 48 Ports 10/100/1000Mbps PoE + 4 10G ports Smart Managed Switch

Best: DGS-3130-54PS 48 10/100/1000Base-T PoE ports + 2 10GBase-T ports + 4 SFP+ ports Lite L3 Managed Switch

Note: We have higher end switches if you need dynamic routing such as OSPF. OSPF (not included in this list)

Any of those options spark your interest?
