Foxit, Nitro and Nuance/Kofax PowerPDF are the ones mentioned most here.

Most software offers maintenance plans or perpetual “rip off’s” as you call it. In the case of PowerPDF it’s entirely optional and under $20/seat. I try to keep all of my LOB software under maintenance especially with the ridiculous amount of changes Microsoft makes to Windows - I want access to technical support if needed and access to current versions of the software to mitigate future compatibility issues.

{"@type":"Person
da-schmoo
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/da-schmoo"}},{"@type":"Answer

And I think that security patches should be the normal state for a software since these security holes are malfunctions in a software.

Thinking more about changes to Windows which require changes to the app which you may not be privy to. Quickbooks comes to mind - getting an older version to work properly with Windows 10 can be painful. Yep thats my risk then.

If a software isn’t compatible anymore with a current OS, then I need to buy a new version of it.

For example take solidworks. It costs about 7k per license and they want 20% of the 7k for service and maintenance every year.

For the people that always need the newest version, ok. Fine. But for the most, you stay with one version for at least 2 - 3 years

After 5 years you can buy a whole new license. But yeah. the risk that you have to buy it new next year is given. But honestly. Hi there,
can anyone recommend me good alternatives for Acrobat Standard?
Best would be if they don’t have a perpetual rip off payment every year for “service”
Thanks in advance!

Foxit Phantom PDF for business would be a great fit. We’ve used it for a few years and their support is awesome plus you can’t beat the onetime payment.
