Did you all come across this news story?
A man from Colorado was apparently left behind by his group of coworkers who had gathered for an all-day hike office retreat. On the descent, the man became separated from the group, lost track of the path back, and ended up stranded, having to spend the night on the mountain. Thankfully, he was able to find cell service and rescuers were able to locate him to safety.

How would you feel about going on an all-day hike as an office retreat?
  • Absolutely! Count me in for the adventure!
  • Sounds fun, but I’d prefer a shorter hike.
  • I’m undecided—can we discuss the snack situation?
  • No thanks! I’d rather stick to a mosquito-free conference room.

It also made me think about some of the team-building activities I’ve had to do in the past, thankfully at a former job. There are all kinds of team-building exercises which aim to enhance teamwork, improve communication, and foster stronger relationships among team members. The most embarrassing was having to do the Oreo Challenge in front of the entire staff, and the best was an all-day float at a tucked away swimming spot.

What about you? Have you ever participated in a team-building activity with your co-workers?

One school I used to work with had an annual bowling outing for the staff.
The President of the School Board referred to it as the “forced fun” event.

When I was reading the article, I couldn’t help but wonder what it spoke to more; the office culture, the regional culture, or the likability of that one guy?

That can be fun, but it really depends on who pick where we go? There are some more hard core than others when it comes to “outdoor fun”.

Gotta love forced fun.

Right? I had so many follow-up questions as well!

I was kind of surprised they got 15 people to agree to do this. 15 people would have a hard time picking what pizza toppings to get, but somehow all agreed to do this.

I am more inclined to believe 14 people conspired to reward Joe for tattling on them in the office…

But then I do have BOFH flashbacks from time to time…

Maybe next year, that guy will be on a Bear Grylls special.

Historically might have been up for a hike, but again my health lets me down now.

My wife’s company scheduled a hike at Crater Lake but got smoked out by a forest fire. Where I used to work occasionally did a quarterly trip to a simulated shooting range and also to a Kart track

Team Building, the Survivor Edition. Gonna be some uncomfortable conversations around the water cooler every time he walks up.

I’d rather hike with people I don’t have to spend 8-10 hours a day with supporting. My luck is I’ll spend it hiking and fixing peoples phones too.

It’s almost as good as those T-B-Exercises, where the manager ends up with his britches around his ankles & some girly spanking him…
Laugh not! I shared my story once, only to hear other multiple identical horror stories in reply!

10-pin bowling, axe throwing, going out for a meal, playing pool, … we have some good ones these days.

At a previous job, the boss thought it would be a good idea to drive for about an hour (each way) to spend a few hours at a beach that was of lesser quality than a couple of excellent swimming and surfing beaches about 5 minutes away. :man_facepalming: It might’ve been a little quieter, but probably not much.
