I’ve been working as a systems engineer for a few years now and before I started the job I tried taking the A+ exam (900 series) a few times but was never able to pass. Once I passed the first part but never progressed from there. So after a few years on the job now, I decided to just move on Network+. I took it last month and missed it by 200 points. I’m using a bunch of different resources: Exam Cram book, CertBlaster, Professor Messer’s materials, Dion Training on Udemy. I feel like I know the material. I spoke to a co-worker about it once and he said that he got certified through his schooling. He also said some people are just test takers and some jobs don’t necessarily require certifications. I would just like to have some certifications under my belt with all this experience I’m gaining.

So, I’m just looking for some advice, study tips or resources that have helped other people.

I have passed a bunch of ComTIA test here is my advice:

First The test is $300 have the mind set going into the test that there is no way you are going to pay $300 to take a test again. That means you are not guessing if you are going to pass you prepared enough you know are going to pass.

compTIA does a pretty good job of listing the objectives of the test . I make flash cards for everyone of them. (double check the test version of that link, I don’t know what the latest version of test is.)

When you sit down at the computer you get something like 10 minutes to read through the rules. You don’t really need to read through that, just understand that your sitting through the whole thing and not cheating. What you do, do with that time is write out your subnet chart:

Also you friend is right lots of people just have real world experience and the certs don’t weigh that much. That being said I think my Net Plus has been very valuable. I can’t draw a direct line between that and any kind of job offer or promotion. But that is were I learned the fundamentals of networking which I use all the time. Just read through some of the post here and it’s clear not everyone does understand the basics of networking.
