Happy ‘Shop Online for Groceries Day!’

(Every time I think they’ve gone too far with these National Days, I see one that’s even more unbelievable. But, hey, it does make for some interesting conversation!)
If you had told me ten years ago I’d be able to put basically my entire grocery list into a cart on my phone and get my groceries without having to step foot in a grocery store, I wouldn’t have believed you! Now, it’s become an essential part of my weekly routine.
I’ll never forget a colleague saying that they only did grocery delivery because driving to the store was a liability. Maybe it would help prevent your car from getting a new ding from a recklessly handled shopping cart. While I’m not so concerned about my car, I do appreciate the time savings. However, I miss picking out my produce and finding out about new stuff. What about you?
Are you shopping for groceries online these days?
- Yes, I shop for groceries online regularly.
- Yes, I occasionally get groceries online.
- No, I prefer shopping for groceries in-store.
- I’ve never shopped for groceries online.

I actually like wandering through grocery stores, picking my own produce and meat and seeing what else is out there I haven’t tried yet or didn’t even know I needed. I voted “occasionally” because every couple of months when I have to go to the membership club to get my eight 40-packs of water bottles, I’ll happily order curbside and let them cart it up and load it in my car for me!

I like to shop in person as gives a chance to look thru the store. I look for Clearance items and other mark downs. I like to look at best before dates to make sure it will not expire before I can finish it.

I’ve never bought groceries online (unless taking advantage of Amazon Subscribe & Save deals like Oreos for $2 counts) and I don’t think I could. I cook quite a bit and having someone else (aside from my girlfriend) picking out the veggies or meat I’ll be using just feels… weird.
It’s like when I need to get lumber for a project - sure, I could place the order through my Lowes app and let the employee pick out what I need, saving me time. But they’re not going to look for the most usable pieces of material, they’re just gonna pick the order as quickly as possible. I’d rather do it myself to make sure I’m getting the best stuff for the job.

Shopping as a Service! No thanks. I prefer shopping in person when it comes to my food. Yeah, it takes time, but I enjoy perusing the aisles. My wife does like to do a pickup if she’s low on time, it’s definitely a nice convenience to have.

Anything fresh I buy in person. Non-food and non-perishables I am ok with online.

Very surprising results, I must say!
I actually love grocery shopping in person, and sometimes still go late at night after my kiddo goes to bed. Perusing the clearance area, trying different and new stuff. I miss that.
Now I’m wondering if online shopping has me spending more or saving.

My neighborhood store started putting things behind locked doors recently - laundry items, toothpaste, aspirin, etc. (all the sundries). You have to go to one of the ends of the aisle to press a button to ring whomever is “responsible” for that aise to unlock and open the cabinet door and they will give you a chit to take to the register and pay when you’re ready. Yeah, I don’t buy things from those aisles at that store anymore so I’ll either buy them online, at other stores or forgo them altogether and buy something else from somewhere else.

I have maybe 3 times. It comes down to what I did that day and if I want to go out in this heat again. Yeah, if I can skip the 115° F heat then yeah I will shop online for dog food and other items like that.

Prefer in store. Sometimes I see something that gives me an idea and I can pivot one of my dinner items quickly.

I work in one of the coolest grocery stores I’ve ever encountered. I love shopping here. We stopped our online service because only 5 people were using it.

I usually go to the supermarket, but some weeks I am so busy that I just don’t have the time or inclination, so I’ll do an online shop and have it delivered on a day that I’m WFH.

I almost always shop online, for groceries and everything else. I do like picking my own stuff in one way, but for me, that doesn’t offset having to go out to a crowded place, or the convenience of it just showing up on the doorstep.
Occasionally I will go out to get fresh nectarines because ordering online for certain fruits is a crap shoot, and I like nectarines that you can eat like an apple, not ones that are soft and dripping down your chin.
Plus, depending on your shopper, they might bring you something gross. Some online places let you rate your shopper so they always have preference for your order, and other places I just buy like a bag of grapes, which is usually okay. They also don’t argue when you ask for a refund for a bag of moldy fruit, so it usually works out.
It’s also much less effort when you buy heavy things, since they bring it to your front door, and if you are shopping online from a place that offers more than groceries, you can have them deliver an HDMI cable and a shovel along with your eggs, grapes, and ice cream, so that works out well too.

I haven’t ever done it. I don’t know why but it doesn’t feel right to me. Granted my opinion may change when I have children with activities and stuff going on where the time savings would be great, but for now I will do it myself.

I’d love to do that, but here where I live only REWE (a really expensive supermarket) offers that.
Also they want to pay a extra fee for that service. No thanks.
Gonna safe me that money and invest those two hours every week

I do like the in-store experience, but when I moved to an apartment up 3 long flights of stairs with no elevator I got into online groceries. Let someone else trudge 30 bags of groceries and bottled water up those stairs in the Florida heat. Of course, I have since moved to another apartment up a similar set of stairs (seriously - I think every apartment in this town is on the 3rd or 4th floor), but the building has an access code which is not to be shared with delivery personnel, so back to in person shopping - why bother to pay the delivery service upcharge plus tip if I have to meet the delivery in the parking lot and carry it all up myself.

I’ve done online grocery shopping 2-3 times, primarily when we were quarantined with Covid. I very much dislike letting someone else pick my fresh fruits/vegetables/meats though…they are just going to grab whatever is on top and go. Canned goods, sure, but not fresh stuff. I’m far too picky.
We have an Aldi on the way home that is so convenient I tend to go in 2-3 times a week. They sell 80% of the grocery items we buy regularly, so I find myself going to the big grocery stores less and less.

For me, grocery shopping is always a unplanned event. Very rarely do I pick out a day when i’m going to the store. Online grocery is very picky about that though which I understand. They usually make you pick out a time slot well in advance or the next day typically. I don’t like that though and I usually just go in to grab the item myself. I’m heading to the store anyways to pick up the groceries so what a few extra steps.

We do two online orders a week (two different stores). It saves so much time vs wandering the isles. And anyone who enjoys the crowds in a store is nuts LOL… We do pickup orders not delivery but the same thing really.
Not only does it save time but it makes sticking to a budget a lot easier as it takes out the impulse purchasing aspect especially with kids. Our local stores are actually pretty good when it comes to ordering fresh items and not getting the bad picks.. They are also really good if there is issues. the few times we have had an issue they refunded the item in question no questions asked
Before we switched to online ordering we used to do this shopping Sunday mornings.. Now if feels like we have Sundays as an actual weekend instead of just a chores day.

its not one or the other… you still have the ability to impromptu show up and buy whatever you forgot as needed
