Howdy all, I’m hoping someone can help me with this major issue.

Three things. I updated my Tape Library to LTO7, was an LTO5 Library. I also replaced my server hardware with a newer server. Switched to Backup Exec VMWare backups. I was using agent only backups on the File Servers.

The problem now is that Backup Exec is not seeing any data on my old End of Month or End of Year backups (LTO5) tapes. I inventory and catalog the tapes, and most of them show up with little to know data. If I try to restore I get a “No backup sets found” error.

I called support, and that was no help whatsoever… The gal told me that Backup Exec is reading the tapes, and if they show up with only 3MB used data, then that means there is no data on them. Which is wrong, because there is no way we did 12 months of failed backups… Plus we have restored from these tapes on the old server.

I think the issue is I need to create a new backup set, or it is confused because I am now doing VM backups and not agent backups? I don’t know, but Veritas better not be telling me that my past backups are all unreadable now…

Backup exec never made those backups though, did it? I suspect that’s the problem.

Can you see backup sets on tapes if you put them back in old server?

Backup Exec did make those backups, but they were done with the agent, and not done as a VM with GRT enabled.

The old server is gone.

Agent based or vm backups doesnt make a difference, if there was backup sets on the tapes. Inventory and catalogue should find them. Were the backup sets expired? Are you having same issue with all tapes used with old server?

Do you have a license for windows agents on your new install? Windows Agent backup is an additional feature and if you never enabled it on the new server, that could be why it is not recognizing what is on the tapes.Could be, but should’nt be, I agree it should inventory / catalog them without the license. Alternately, you could try and hook up the old tape library to rule out hardware.
