I have a barracuda backup 890 and i am having some problems with it. I am wondering if any other spiceheads are having these same issues.
I havent had a night of all successful backups for about 3 months. I finally got my case escalated and the tech said that the cirrent backup server im running had hardware problems and is rebooting multiple times a day. No problem, i pay for the instant replacement so they sent me a brand new $30,000 backup server 890.
now i cant get the old one to sync its old backups to the new backup server because the old one is still doing its reboot thing due to hardware problems, so i say to scrap all the old backups because i really really really want backups of our current data. The tech told me that he is having the new backup server do backups of the same machines. I logged into that machine (not the barracuda cloud) and looked at last nights backups and they have all failed except the one server i dont care about. Now a new tech is telling me that the one server that DID backup is the cause of all other servers not being able to backup and he is wanting me to go through troubleshooting step #1 from about 3 months ago again. Im starting to wonder at what point i should go tell the CEO that i wasted $30,000.
Barracuda, I NEED HELP!!!
Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Everything we tried from Barracuda so far is flaky at best. Some products just don’t work at all. Support is hit and miss. I’m not sure how they are in business and would not trust their products

I have their Spam & Virus filter and it works great, but i really feel that i made a mistake with the backup server at this point in time. Ive spent over $30k when I include updates and cloud storage etc, and yet if we had a fire today i would lose my job and a $260M/yr company would lay off hundreds of people.

We have a less than one month old 890 that they are in the process of replacing. They told us that they suspect a bad DIMM. I will let you know if our new unit solves our problems. This is our first Barracuda product and it is a little hard to remain positive when we start off having problems and expensive hardware needing to be replaced.

I hear you Jeremy_559. I was told when we bought it that the agent autoupdates. I have removed/reinstalled that agent so many times that i want to stick an ice pick in my ear!
And on this problem the tech actually told me that our antivirus is causing the problem and to remove it! Running a production server without antivirus sounds sort of stupid to me but im only a systems admin.

I chose not to purchase following a 30 day trial of the Barracuda Backup appliance. I found it hit and miss with backups and the GUI on the local appliance was incredibly slow.
Just wondering how many servers and how much data are you backing up for 30k? Are they all Windows?
By the way, we tried their proxy based (Cloud) web filtering- junk
On premise firewalls - flaky. On premise web filtering devices - flaky.
Support - flaky.
Multiple times we found their products not doing what they are advertised to do. I had clients Yell at me because their devices freeze and cause downtime or don’t produce reports that you paid for. If you did not return the product within 30 days you are stuck unless you bring company lawers in. I have couple of their devices in my office acting as door stoppers as clients refused to use them and I had to eat the cost. Most dishonest company I dealt with. Will never do business with again.

Wow, I’m surprised by all the negative reviews of Barracuda. I’ve have multiple Barracuda devices for many years and have very few problems. We are currently running a Barracuda Backup 490 and it’s been running fine. I’ve done restores of files/folders and even Exchange/Outlook accounts with no issues.
I also have a Message Archiver, Spam filter, web filter and just upgraded old Cisco routers to new Barracuda Firewalls. The firewalls have had some basic issues but have been able to resolve all of them so far with the exception of one item but I think it’s a result of the Comcast cable modem signal and not the firewall.
Regarding your backups failing, what error messages are you getting? The cloud should be telling you what the problem is and I’d hope that tech support would be able to help you fix that. I would make sure that you are running the latest backup agents on each server, especially if you are keeping up with the firmware updates.
Overall, I’m very happy with Barracuda products and they’ve been a godsend to work with via tech support.

Also forgot to add, can’t you just get your old backups from the cloud instead of from a device that is having problems? Barracuda keeps your backups in multiple places throughout the country. Mine are in Michigan and Atlanta, GA. I’ve never had any issues restoring data to any server.

We’re on our 4th Barracuda Backup appliance.
1st - did not work straight out of the box.
2nd - seems to have broken the config database, apparently because it got filled right up.
3rd - upgraded from a 490 to a 690 for more capacity. Barracuda migrated our existing config and backups over to the bigger unit. Which then broke it.
4th - started again with another new 690. Rebuilt config from scratch, backed up everything all over again.
It seems to be working mostly ok now, and we are also successfully replicating to a Barracuda unit owned by our 3rd party support company (except the reporting on that function is currently broken). Still waiting to find out if they can rescue all the historical backups that are still on the broken 690.
The consensus from our support engineers is that most Barracuda products and support systems are great, but the backup units and UK support for them are not quite up to scratch yet. I’ve been told that apparently Barracuda are considering fast-tracking some UK support staff through the USA training to get them up to speed.
To be fair to Barracuda, all the replacements were next day as promised. I’ve done plenty of test restores, and they’ve all been fine.

While admittedly I don’t have much experience with their backup system I have a lot of experience with their other products, especially the firewalls and they have always proven to be rock solid for me both in performance and durability

I’ve worked with probably 40 of the barracuda backup units specifically 490s and below across a variety of clients (medical, Lawyers, etc…). We’re usually backing up 1-5 windows machines and these things are rock solid. Time and time again we’ve done reliable restores and DR from these units. There are some hiccups every now and then, failed backups, etc… but we’ve always been able to trace it down to the windows box, I think we’ve replaced one BBS because it had a corrupted file system out of the box, took the tech all day to diagnose, but once done, the replacement showed up quite quickly.

Update. Barracuda was able to resolve to problem remotely. The new hardware replacement was canceled and we have not had any additional problems. I am pretty impressed with the solution now that it is working correctly my only nag is that it does not support granular restores to SharePoint and requires a third party application other than that I am pretty happy.
