I’ve got kind of a one off problem.

I have a remote location that has two users, one in each building. The site is covered by a 20 mile PTP wireless link.

The equipment to the communications tower and within the communications tower handles the VLANs and necessary QoS fine (We are moving user data traffic, VoIP, Video over IP, and some control/monitoring system information.)

The users each have living quarters within easy range of wireless transmission. The living quarters are in an area where aerial runs of fiber optic or ethernet are out of the question and running either in ground is less than ideal (the location is in a marsh and conditions for trenching wire create a huge expense. I’ve run equipment in this location and burying something in the soft, sticky mud is not just likely, its going to happen, so plan on it.). The budget is also a bit tight, so the higher end wireless units are probably out of the question.

I need to bridge the network (VLANs and all) to the users in each of their living quarters and trunk three of the VLANs over this wireless connection.

Right now, there is a Cisco WAP4410n in the comm tower broadcasting 3 SSIDs (each on one of the three VLANs I need) and in reach of the living quarters. I need to bridge these VLANs to a switch (the users each have a computer, printer, VoIP phone, and IP Video Security equipment)

Yes, I know that the bandwidth will not be terrific, but it is what it is. The PTP bandwidth isn’t incredible either, but with QoS and rate limiting, it works well enough for the TWO users)

Does anyone have any ideas?

I have considered using multiple bridges connected to each of the SSIDs on each of the three VLANs, but this is a messy solution in my opinion. I’m not real familiar with the options and searches haven’t turned up anything that looks viable.

Thanks in advance, everyone.

2 Spice ups

You need to set up a 2nd ptp link from the site with your internet to the site with living quarters.

ubiquiti Airmax equipment will do this.

If set up correct the link will also pass your vlan info without any issues as is simply forwards everything it receives across to what ever the receiving unit is connected to

Molan, I pretty much figured it was down to setting up another PTP. The Ubiquiti hardware looks promising. I’ve used their APs a bit in the past, but the last time I had looked at them, I don’t remember them having the offering they have now. I’ll update this and let you know how it all works out.
