Hello,

Although I’ve been working with computers since the early '90’s and have been the go-to guy for nearly all technical issues for family, friends, and friends of friends friends, I have no corporate networking experience. I have a technical background in an unrelated field and owned a business in that field for 11-years. Due to some health concerns that unseated me from my immediately previous employer (Degenerative Disc Disease), I find myself changing careers rather late in life. Since I am unable to return to my former employment I qualify for assistance in retraining. That assistance provided me the opportunity to pursue A+ and Network+ certifications largely at their expense. I understand the basic nature of the certs and look to them only for basic credibility. I have my A+ and am working on my Network+ currently. Unfortunately there’s a time constraint where I must have both certs and be done with school by the 29th of this month. This means I have to be employable and hopefully employed not long after. At least that’s the goal.

From what I gather by reading the various posts the vast majority of you have been working in IT long enough to have a good foothold if not be well established in the industry. It seems reasonable to me to ask for input/advice/direction/sanity/etc. regarding how best to get that toehold that turns into a foothold. Anything is welcome. There is a local SpiceCorps meeting next month I plan to attend.

My current home network consists of 3 PC’s (2 Win8.1, 1 XP), 1 Mac, 1 Ubuntu Netbook, 1 iPad, 1 Android Phone, 1 NAS, 1 Printer, 1 VOIP, 1 Roku, 1 UPS, and 3 Unmanaged Switches covering 4 seperate rooms. I’ve thought about using an old PC as a server and reconfiguring the network accordingly, but I don’t currently have the time as noted above. Nevertheless, it seems like a good idea and worth pursuing.

Anyway, I thought maybe I should make an introduction and see what happens. The best advice usually comes from those who have already been where one is. If nothing else I’ll get some good feedback and perhaps even make a new friend or two.

Hi Mike! Welcome to Spiceworks! If you don’t know already, there is a SpiceCorps of Salem meeting coming up that you should definitely try to make. I am hoping to attend, as I have yet to make it to one of the Salem ones. Look forward to meeting you!

Thanks, Brian. That’s the meeting I refer to in my post. It’s in my calendar to attend. Hope to see you there as well!
