I currently work for a large company as an IT specialist, I have been at current Company for about a year, I truly love working there and all, but there were a few things that made me look for a new job.

One, my commute is really bad, about hour and 15 each way.

Two, my pay is not great, I make hourly, but not that good.

At the new Company, I was offered about 30%, and I will be “Salaried”, I was excited about moving on, but I also felt bad to leave my Current Company since I really enjoy working there.

Bottom line, I accepted the new job offer, and I am supposed to start by the end of November, but the problem is, my current Company is trying hard to keep me therefore they counter-offered the new Company (After I accepted New Job offer).

Here is the thing, I want to stay but at the same time I want to leave!

I have done a lot of research on accepting a counter offer and how badly it can end up, however my manager guaranteed that it won’t affect or change anything if I stay.

To go back to the main title and why I titled it that way, here is why:

I recently found out that at new Company, I might be doing Facilities and IT work at the same time, so it is kind of a Hybrid Position, and I will be the only guy for this position versus having a team at my current job.

Benefits at Current Company:

Three Weeks vacation (PTO)

Education Tuition reimbursement

Company Cell Phone

401K 4% Match

Health insurance is expensive but they have multiple plans

Benefits at New Company:

Two weeks vacation (Non-PTO)

Six days Sick Time

Company Cell Phone

No Education Reimbursement

Good Health insurance

401K 4% Mathc, but it will start after a year

Closer commute

Higher salary (Exempt)

I would greatly appreciate it if you can give me an advice on this one, I am very hesitant on transitioning to the new Company, but I also do not want to burn any bridges at current Company either, My current company want me to stay, many of the Senior managers tried to talk me out of it including HR manager, and the Director of Finance including my IT manager.

Please advise and let me know if you have any questions.

I can answer that question for you. Because you’re not in a unique situation.

Whatever reasons you had to leave will not change if you stay. Money is not a motivator. It does not make bad things go away or suddenly make you enjoy a job you don’t now.

Being part of a team can be a safety net. Working on your own is harder. Time to step up to the challenge.

No amount of money, benefits, friends, titles, or anything else at work can replace the quality of your life NOT spent in a car on the way to and from work.

Your manager is lying. As soon as you’re back, the punishment phase will begin. Others will resent you because you “played the game” and got rewarded. Those who were loyal will hate you because you make them look like fools. You’ll always be “the guy who left before and might do so again.” You’ll never get the best assignments because you’ve proved you can’t be trusted.

Loyalty is a good quality, but it should serve you, not just the company. You can feel bad for them, but the truth is, no one every cried about someone leaving. They’ll replace you in a minute. Having you stay is a lot easier for them than recruiting someone new.

Take on this new job, grow into the position, and use the opportunity to improve yourself.

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

This is a question for you to answer. If you’re posting this topic here it seems like it is a mistake in your eyes personally.

{"@type":"Person
zuphzuph
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/zuphzuph"}},{"@type":"Answer

3nd of November?

Back to the serious side, there isn’t anyone here who can advise you what is best for you, only you can answer that, but put things in to perspective.

If both jobs offered the same money, same health, same holiday, same everything but in your old job you do what you do now and in the new job you do a split role, apart from the commute - would you stay or go?

If the new job was 5k more a year but they was identical otherwise, what would you do?

To state you love your current job, but then want to leave - you can’t love it that much, something else must be driving you to leave and accept another job elsewhere

It’s a situation many have been in, and many more will be in, but the ultimate decision is with the person who wants to make that change, in this scenario - you!

{"@type":"Person
Rod-IT
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Rod-IT"}},{"@type":"Answer

Problem is, I want to move on but I really feel bad for my current company, they have no one after I leave, someone else also left his position.

Question for you, would doing Facilities work along with IT help my Resume in the long run? I obviously care about learning new skills, preferably IT related, but I do not mind if I learn new stuff that would definitely help me in the future.

Thanks for your response!

{"@type":"Person
kylelouis
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/kylelouis"}},{"@type":"Answer

Does facilities interest you? If you’re the lone guy, what’s workload IT wise? You know, how many servers, workstations, etc.? Is the place in pretty good shape or are you looking at 80 hour weeks for the next year?

{"@type":"Person
trelstadtech
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/trelstadtech"}},{"@type":"Answer

Loyalty is a good thing but looking out for #1 is more important. Assuming the reasons you want to leave aren’t all financial related, my question would be will those reasons still exist if you stay. If so, you’ll still be unhappy.

{"@type":"Person
da-schmoo
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/da-schmoo"}},{"@type":"Answer

Probably not unless you apply for something in a smaller company where this would be helpful or you apply for a facilities job, it wont hurt it but I doubt it will boost your skill set in the IT world.

Feeling bad about leaving a job is 50% of people and the other 50% don’t care, it shows you have a conscience, but remember you go there because you are paid not just because you are a nice guy.

Try another question - would you still be there if they said, look, we’re sorry but we need to cut wages, you can still work for us but we need to drop your pay by 5k - would you stay? If your answer is no, like everyone else you go for the money, sure you may let a few people you consider to be friends down, but this is business.

You need to be able to pay your way in life, feed your family, pay your bills, have a roof over your head, it’s nothing personal to them why you are leaving, and I am sure they know this.

{"@type":"Person
Rod-IT
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Rod-IT"}},{"@type":"Answer

The main tow reasons I was leaving were, the pay and the commute, both are better at new job, but I am not sure what I am walking into. Plus, at current Company, I truly like my team, it is a Sys Admin, a Network Admin, and IT manager, small team but overall there are about 250 users in the building.

At new company, they have four locations, about total of 100 users, so I will be supporting 30+ users in one building. I will have two offices, in two different locations (8 miles apart). Oh, and new company is a Healthcare Practice.

{"@type":"Person
kylelouis
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/kylelouis"}},{"@type":"Answer
