In a few weeks, I am stepping away from my current system administrator role and moving to IT security.

I’ve been working as a system administrator since 2001, first for an SMB as a single person IT “team” and then for a larger company, part of a larger team. For a few years now, I’ve been pondering the idea of changing path. I think I’ve been burning out. I still like to do most of my job, but there are things that I just can’t stand anymore.

Company I currently work for opened a new position as IT Security specialist. They are offering training and everything. I applied to it and a few weeks ago was told I have the job. Without official training, I scored high enough on the technical test they had me pass.

I am currently slowly transitioning (knowledge transfer) while they are hiring some one to replace me at my current position.

I do feel a little bit anxious about the change as this will be a big change, but I think that if things go right, it will bring so much to my career.

I’ve been a member of the Spiceworks community for a long time now, and always appreciated the valued input I received here and I’ve learned a lot from everyone. I intend to stay around and keep in touch with the technologies.

New career paths are always exciting! Nerves are quite understandable, but it all depends on how you feel about the change. Do you feel happy? Excited? Ready to tackle new challenges? All of these contribute to your overall well-being. You wanted change, you applied for it, and now there’s a path for you. Embrace it and get ready for a new chapter to open up to you. Congrats!
