As Sean mentioned in his recent post , in the new Community, the “Collections” feature that existed in vintage community won’t exist. The links you have stored in collections won’t be carried directly over, and will have to be saved somewhere else on your end until they can be added on the new site, starting March 4th.

As a replacement, there are a few capabilities of the new site that could be used. There is a way to add bookmarks to posts in the community (there will be a bookmark link at the bottom of any post as shown below), and that will quite possibly be enough for most of what you want to keep.

However, for those people that have extensive collections and who want them organized in different buckets the way collections were on the vintage site, there is another option where you can add custom links to the left sidebar on the new site, which I have detailed below.

WARNING: Please don’t try this until the new site is ready (after leap day). If you add a custom section before then, it will just get wiped when they do the leap day reset of the new site. Wait until the site is live after that, and in the interim, copy your links over to a seperate place so you don’t lose them when vintage community goes down.

Here is how to add a section for custom links in the new community:

First, go to the main page of community, and on the left sidebar, at the bottom, click the + icon.

Note: The three horizontal lines to the left of the Spiceworks logo turn the left sidebar on and off, in case the left sidebar isn’t showing.

You will see an Add custom section pop-up.

  1. In the Section title area, name the new section whatever you want. If you aren’t feeling that creative, try “My Links.”
  2. Select an Icon from the drop-down (okay to leave it at default if you like, but there are a lot of interesting ones if you want something specific).
  3. Add the name of the page in the Name area.
  4. Add the URL in the Link area.
  5. Add more links as desired, following the previous instructions.
  6. Once you are done adding links, click the Save button to add the section to your left menu.
  7. Repeat as needed if you would like to add another collection as a custom section.

… That’s it.

Let me know if you have any questions. For now I am just adding all of my collections links to Keep, and then will add them back in once the new site is up, but if anyone has a better way, feel free to add it below.
