I am in need for a CD / bootable USB to reset windows 10 local account passwords.

The one I have been using for years does not want to work with Windows 10.

Any suggestions ?

Very easy, works like on all the others… use a Linux Live DVD… navigate to c:\windows\system32.

Find the sethc.exe, and name it e.g. “sethc_old.exe”. Copy the cmd.exe and rename it sethc.exe.

Start Windows back up, and click on the help button (or press shift about 5-6 times) and you get an admin cmd prompt. From there you can use regular commands such as net user to reset the password. Once done delete the sethc.exe and rename the _old one back. Done.

FYI the pogo stick tool does not work on 10. Been there, failed that.

Neally’s suggestion, however, does work on 10.

I think this is what gets my users into trouble.

I use elcommsoft’s password recovery tool, haven’t tried with 10, but works with local user and admin accounts on all other versions…

I will advise you to check your the easiest way by downloading app “Speecy” from Piriform (it is actually for OS 8 and down), but after installation you will be able to see your key code already installed. Take a note and write it down on paper other solution is far more complicated because you have to write a program in Note I can dive a link:

so, read the article and find already written program in note. There are also “keyfinder” app etc… Most important that it is all LEGAL so nothing crack-y or else. Use your own keys so if you reset go to Microsoft site where you can download LEGAL iso file and you are done.

He’s working with local account passwords, alexandarpetre, not product keys.

I have used this method in widows 7,8,10.

“I have used this method in widows 7,8,10.”

Is that what they call Operating Systems that are no longer “supported”?

Neally’s method is the one I use (not on 10 yet though). Works like a charm!

Offline NT Password Editor is the tool you need. It’s included in Hiren’s Boot CD.

It ONLY works on local accounts. It’s useless when dealing with Microsoft Accounts or domain accounts.

Had issues with it starting Win 8 and newer.

I found the method I posted, for me, the most reliable. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Never had a problem with it on 8/8.1, haven’t needed it on 10 yet.

Haven’t tried it with 10, but with 8/8.1 you can boot off a cd and enable the Admin account, then login to it and remove the password from any account you want.

Have to boot off CD for the command prompt to work, if you boot off the tools on the drive it will ask for a password to open the command prompt.

Command Prompt (command shell or cmd.exe) is another free application in Windows operating system that can help you when you forgot Windows 10 password. Just run the application.

Note: To use Command Prompt to reset password, you need to have another account to login as an administrator.
Click “Start” and type “command” in the search box. Right-click on Command Prompt and “Run as administrator”. Type “net user Username New password” in Command Prompt as below. Hit Enter.

also there are many other ways to help reset your windows password like ntpassword, iseepassword, ophrcak.

there is always a way that works.
