Hey Guys and Gals,

I am loving this website you have all setup and the information that has been gathered over the years.

Last night I was told that I could upload my CV here for someone in HR to review it, and figure out a way to improve.

Which section can I do this in and who could I approach kindly to review my resume.

Strip the resume of contact info and personal details and post it here. A number of people here can look it over and offer suggestions. We’ve done it several times.

I am going to be brutally honest. That needs alot of work IMO.

A few years ago, Mine was pretty rough too. I applied all sorts of places with no call backs. I decided to pay to have my resume professionally done. After getting my resume professionally done, within 2 weeks I had 4 interviews and 3 job offers. It was well worth the $100 I paid

Thank you IRJ, I will be looking into getting it done professionally and re post it.

Joel,

Did you use a local place? I’m thinking of doing just this.

Thanks,

Bryan in Viera

The layout needs a lot of work. It’s difficult to follow along. First, get it down to one page. The white space makes it look “empty”. Next, try to get rid of as much non-IT related stuff as possible while still emphasizing that you kept yourself busy with IT work over the last few years. try a layout like this

This the professional I used. I was more than happy and you can see many others were too.

Less non-IT, less white space, 1 page go it.

I agree with all of the above. I know that CVs are different than resumes but that one is pretty bad in my honest opinion. I am uploading my resume with the personal information edited out.

You must have a Skills type of section. This helps you get noticed and key skills are up front and noticed.

I have helped many friends create a very professional resume which will pass all of the “keyword” scans.

See what you think of this one. It is a bit too long and I usually only send the first two pages.

Thank you very much for all this.

Can you please define the difference between a CV and a Resume?

I like Erin’s Resume alot. It has alot of similarities to the way mine is laid out. If you have any certs make sure to list them as well as a a to verify them on your resume. For Microsoft, you can use your MCP number and your potential employer can verify your certs before they even interview you.

I just don’t understand why you have qualifications, which basically list your job titles and your degree. I think you can remove that item completely.

Stick to bullet points for your job descriptions. Use action words.

Ex: Change “We provided both business and private customers with the most accurate solutions based on their needs.”

to “Provided solutions for private and business purposes”

Also, I think your job descriptions could use some work. They seem very general. It doesn’t show the depth of your IT knowledge.

What kind of OS can you work on? What products are you familiar with?

I’m not sure if your potential employer would care that you did hospitality business if you’re looking for a job in IT. It could be useful if you have white space and want to show that you are familiar with customer care, but I feel like your last job kind of covers that for you.

Education is really outdated. I don’t think you should list anything other than your Kingston University degree, unless you think they need an IT guy to fly them somewhere.

Also the Personal Profile thing is a bit… awkward? Employers can get a sense of your personality through interview. Personally I don’t think you want them to have any first impressions before talking to or meeting you in terms of your personality.

Your resume should highlight what you can do and what you have done that relate to the job you want.

Note to self…list what you work with and what you have been doing…everything else dump it.

Thank you very much, I will be making the changes.
