I am in the middle of planning to move a data center across the US and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for companies that specialize in moving equipment. Like we want to take down our servers and storage and infrastructure and move it.

You should do it. Have the company rent you a truck and jump in and go for an adventure!

While that sounds like a fun adventure, this is across the other side of the country and is a lot of equipment. I am more of a, “get on a plane and get it over with” kind of guy.

I would normally ask help or recommendations from the new data center location since you are moving in
They all suck. My experience tells me that letting those “equipment moving companies” do this job always, and I mean it, always leads to huge time and effort losses to get everything up and running. In my opinion, the best you and your team can do in that particular situation is to unrack, uncable, and pack everything the way it should be done, including marking everything like what is what and what goes where, etc., and let the moving company handle it further. Obviously, the reverse operation has to be done in a remote data center, so you and your team have to go for a business trip, preferably combined with a short vacation or party upon successful project finish (depending on where you are going, of course).
Don’t forget to get insurance for all the equipment going from point a to point B. An accident, theft, damage while moving things can get very costly. This applies regardless if you and your team move things or get a company to do this.

I know I’m late to the party here but hopefully this helps someone down the line.
Absolutely hire professional data center migration companies - NOT A MOVING COMPANY.
There are a few very specialized companies who do everything for you, from cable tracing, move planning, pre-cabling, labeling, moving, reracking, etc. I’ve used a couple in the past for some pretty large projects. Check out CTRL+V for US, EU, and APAC. Technimove is really good in the UK and nearby countries. They both have custom materials, all the insurance, and real DC techs - not movers.

I’ve done this (small datacenters - like just two 25U racks).
Honestly I didn’t trust anyone, I used my own truck and moved all the hardware myself. Sorry, but if I am responsible for the data, then I am also responsible for care and feeding of the equipment.
I did trust fellow employees to help me pack the stuff into my truck. Yes I’m probably a weird IT guy, I own a 3500 dually diesel and had a locking cap on my truck at the time.
I only moved Cleveland OH, to Delaware Water Gap, PA, so it wasn’t a long drive (8 hours each way). Cross country, yep, I’d do that.
For the record I had 2 IT guys helping me load and make sure equipment was well protected, and several of our supply chain/packaging guys who were the tops in organizing everyone.

This is what we ended up doing. We hired a company called Ctrl-V Inc. (https://controlvsymphony.com ) to move our data center. Everything showed up at our new data center across the country with no issues. They had someone come down and look at what we had and they did a great job packaging up all of our equipment. The one thing that I was not aware of at the time (and maybe I missed the fine print), but they sub-contracted the actual moving of our equipment. I believe this may be based on the package we selected. They do offer different methods of delivery (depending on how fast you want your equipment to arrive at its destination).
With that being said, I do believe they have their own moving vehicles (might be based on source location and destination). Also, this truck was dedicated to us and they took it serious when strapping down the boxes in the truck.
I would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking to move their data centers.

Even later reply. My company offers services for all physical needs for a data center relocation such as packing, rack and stack, etc. We have specialized crates to move these devices. Check us out at www.movemydatacenter.com
