If you want to pay $2000 at a minimum to a data recovery company. Unless this a critical server or user, not really worth it. Backups are key.

It is possible, especially if the format is fresh. I would try several different products. I like EaseUS Free Data Recovery Software for PC [2024 Updated] - EaseUS but others recommend Download Recuva | Recover deleted files, free!

You could try testdisk ( TestDisk Download - CGSecurity ) to recover the old partition.

There are a ton of utilities out there that should work as long as you haven’t messed with it too much. What kind of partition was it?

Of course depends on method how disk was formatted. Recovered ratio might be poor but still worth to follow for @jamesa555 recommendations.

I used testdisk once, never again. I did it on a USB drive to retrive the C++ codes I have in there. You’ll get a bunch of files back no with name or date. You’ll get multiple version of the same file, because you saved it 20 times. True, it’s better than nothing, but sorting out all the stuff took me a long while.Backup, backup, and backup. For customer, I refer them to here, since it’s local and they do GREAT work. Hard Drive Data Recovery Special - Chandler Data Professionals

I don’t mean to be rude, please don’t take this the wrong way. It sounds like you’re complaining that the product worked? Sure it can’t recover all of the information from the file, because it’s not there. It is recovering raw data. I agree it would be nice if when it recovered it recovered all information, but yes backups are key. If you had backups you would not be using testdisk in the first place.

One suggestion: take a bit-level image of your formatted disk before you attempt any recovery operation. This way you can work on the copy (or copy of a copy) rather than work directly on the original disk. This is a common forensic practice to avoid accidently modifying your disk during the recovery process.
Cheers!

That wasn’t my intention to complain that testdisk worked. I’m just letting the world knows what to expect when they use a recovery tool like testdisk. It seems to be that no one ever talk about the result of using testdisk so I am sharing it now.
Recuva at www.piriform.com seems to do the job for you.

I have used GetDataBack NTFS and it is great. The recovery takes a while and if there is physical damage to the disk it doesn’t always work but for a $79 license, any data you recover more than free tools it is worth it. Data Recovery Software — Downloads

have used recuva and easeus on recently formatted disk with success
I’ve use TestDisk and it works wonders. Give it a try, its 100% free to use. I always donate when it recovers something lost.
As a Digital Forensic Examiner, I would forensically image the drive and use another computer for processing the image. The more you use the drive you want to recover data from, the less likely you will be able to. Do a comparison (on Google) of the mentioned tools and choose the best one for your needs. FTK Imager is a good forensic imager for example.
i have used icare data recovery and it found some stuff. It takes a long time to run so be patient.
Off course, you can recover data. When lost data after formatting disk, I used Remo Recover application which assisted all way to restore my data back. It worked pretty much… Try once…
