90% of getting business is by word of mouth. Volunteer for a local non-profit to help get your name out there. Sales of IT services is not an easy thing even for some of us bigger Service Providers.

I’m a fan of Facebook advertising; keep that up, but make sure you’re driving traffic to a dedicated landing page that makes it very, very easy for visitors to contact you. Are you getting clicks on your ad?

You may want to look into joining some associations, such as http://mspalliance.com/

Definitely join your local professional organizations (young professionals of [your area], etc), networking events, mixers, meetups - as Danielle said, word of mouth is key. It’s tough if you’re not super social by default, but it’s worth working on.

Good luck!

Danielle is right on regarding word of mouth / referrals.

When getting started I went through all my contacts and emailed every one of them to let them know I was in business for myself. I did not ask them for work directly but asked them to refer me to anyone that could you my services. This takes away the shield we all put up when someone is trying to sell and moves the person into the position of helping you.

Also when you go to local events do not be pushy, introduce yourself, and then speaking with folks ask them about their business and family make them a friend and you will have someone that will market for you.

Good Luck

Thanks everyone for the insight.

Most places will have a local business networking group or three that may be worth looking into. Sometimes these can be costly, and others they can become very little more than coffee clubs with little actual business networking and sometimes you may simply not be a great fit for the group as a whole so do not be deterred if you have to visit a few to get your feet under you.

These groups can be fantastic if you manage to find one that works for you, from both a personal and business development perspective.

Don’t be shy about getting out and about and knocking on doors of local businesses either. Let them know who you are, what you do and make sure they know how to reach you if something comes up.
