I had set up a GPO so that if a user is not logged on to a computer for 30 days the computer should delete the users profile up on restart. And it actually worked but the trouble is I have lost a users profile which is very important. I have tried restore previous version but I can only find one version there which is not helpful. Is there any chance to get the file (users profile folder) back ? I am running windows 7 professional. please advice

Unless they use roaming profiles, folder redirection or you physically back up their device, it’s gone.

Why would you do this?

Why woudl you do this live without proper testing first?

What if people are on long-term sick, off having a child or some other reason they are off more than 30 days?

What are you trying to achieve by deleting their profile?

Unless you have backups you are probably out of luck - removing a user profile can be dangerous.

only 1 previous version right ?see if recuva can save you.

Thanks for the tips and advice. Can I use any file recovery program and recover those files?

Try as above Recuva, but if the machine has wrote data since, there is a good chance it has overwritten files and possibly the users data.

I would guess to free up space. Just not well thought out though. If space is an issue, of course use folder redirection and scale that out as needed.

We do this here as best practice. It saves on HDD space. Users are advised not to store on their desktops, but to their “Home” drive instead. If someone is on long term sick or maternity, then their files are still safe on their home drive, but the profile is removed from their machine for security.

Just disable their account instead.

Why? in my case I have machines out there with 200+user profiles which cause issues with SCCM inventory - but my mitigation is I have a roaming profile equivalent in place and redirected file locations

Our policy is no one stores any data on a workstation device for security reasons.

disabling their account does not achieve the desired result
