Hi, I just got a new Dell Optiplex 5040 and physically installed the Samsung 950 Pro SSD in the m.2 slot, and I see it in boot sequence in bios (when legacy option is chosen), but not when UEFI is chosen…so right now it’s in legacy mode…but I also don’t see the drive under ‘Drives’ M.2 PCIe SSD in bios
I simply want to install Windows 10 on this SSD as the boot…AHCI is on, what do I do??

My first thought was you might need a BIOS update. Looks like your SSD is specifically mentioned here : http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=8GH4F

Hi, the bios version is 1.2.7
You need to update the BIOS.

Have you actually tried installing Windows with it in there? If it shows up in legacy mode, then the system sees it. The Optiplexes I have don’t list anything in the UEFI boot order until an OS is installed (though I disable all other options), then you can choose to boot from Windows Boot Manager.

Look under system information, it’s listed with the cards, not the SATA drives.
Something else I remember from using the same drive in an Asus motherboard. For NVMe drives like you have, you may need to change SATA Mode, perhaps to RAID. I don’t know the exact settings on your system. In my case, once I got the right settings, Windows 10 install found it no problem and I installed the boot partition there.

Also, I have an adapter that I can plug the SSD into…(Lycom DT-120), but should I plug it into the PCIe2x4 or PCI3x16 slot? I remember reading something about lanes but I’m not sure which is fastest
Unless your installing a second NVMe drive, I don’t see the point. Your Windows install will find it if you have the SATA mode set correctly. Also NVMe and ACHI drives are two different things. That said, NVMe uses 4 PCIe 3.0 channels. If you don’t need the PCI3x16 for something else use it.

Thanks all…still no luck installing the SSD! I did however put the SSD onto the Lycom and into the PCI3x16 slot, and bios/OS install still cant seem to install it

If the 5040 is anything like the 7040 and has an M.2 slot already, there’s absolutely no need for the adapter. Put it back where it was, look in the BIOS for it under Cards, and try installing Windows without worrying about the UEFI boot order. And when you boot to install it, make sure it’s not trying to boot from USB in legacy mode.

Thanks…it does have a m.2 slot and I had it in there originally…where is the ‘cards’ section in the BIOS? I don’t see it.

Also, when I check Legacy under boot option list I see the samsung drive listed but as soon as I change it to UEFI it’s gone

Cards are under System Information, somewhere near the top. I’m not looking at one at the moment, but it’s wherever it shows how much memory and what CPU it is.

I don’t see any such thing…the attached pic is what I see.

On the 7040, I see a serial or part number on that second entry. I’d start with updating the BIOS (1.4.4 is current) and make sure that drive is compatible.

You may need to update the m.2 950 firmware in order for the system to see the drive under UEFI.
If you have a spare hard drive with Windows already installed on it, boot into that drive, download the updated firmware for the m.2 950, install then set the Dell BIOS to UEFI to see if that does the trick.

Any update on this thread I am looking at purchasing 10 of OP5040 for a client and adding Samsung 950 drives.
