I view them as separate.

Dev and OPS are like oil and water. I do not see the point.

I would rather be ops, devs have left a bad taste for me.

( Bumped to the DevOps forum for better exposure )

Well, it sounds like step one is just figuring out all what DevOps is and what parts of it interest you (it’s a pretty wide domain). At its core DevOps is more of a philosophy , and then there’s specific technologies like CM and release management and monitoring/metrics that tend to reside there as it’s the intersection of development and operations.

There is a pluralsight DevOps overview course but I can’t speak to its quality. Consider visiting a DevOpsDays close to you, listening to the DevOps Cafe podcast, and subscribing to the DevOps Weekly newsletter to get immersed.

One of the best ways to get a grounding may be to read Tom Limoncelli’s new book, The Practice of Cloud System Administration .

Praz,

If you are wanting to know more about DevOps, read this whitepaper titled, " For The Love of DevOps ." This whitepaper discusses the increasing demand for DevOps Administrators. Also, I wanted to share this video discussing the two different disciplines incorporated in DevOps, system administration and development:

These DevOps intros and guides lose me every time. They all start with something about “cooperation between admins and developers” and I go “What?” I’ve been in several IT organizations and have never had any on-staff developers. I think these types of explanations often confuse people which is why we end up with job postings for “DevOps Engineers.”

I read this article recently and it kind of made the DevOps thing make sense to me, particularly this line:

“They call this technique DevOps because it applies traditional programming techniques to system administration tasks.”

Now I’m starting to get it!
