As of two weeks ago, Microsoft has finally made changes to allow for turning off the built-in “automatic gain adjustment” Skype for Business uses to help manage audio. While most users won’t run into debilitating audio problems with microphones when utilizing SfB, anyone in a call center or loud environment could have issues with their microphone sound being put through the ringer. Now with only some basic registry changes, users can take back control over their microphone audio.

Step 1: Open Registry editor

In Registry Editor create and set the follow registry entry:

HEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Lync]

“ShowAutomaticGainControlOption”=dword:00000001

Step 2: Open Skype for Business

Navigate to Tools > Options > Audio Device

You will now notice a check box that has “Automatically adjust microphone volume in calls” which can be unchecked.

You can now avoid having Skype for Business mess with your audio. Should you want to make these changes with Group Policy, you can follow the steps from the link provided.
