Does your company allow the end users to bring in their own peripherals? Specifically their own keyboards and mice from home. If not, why not?

Generally no. Because then they’ll want reimbursement for it. What’s stopping someone from buying a 50" 4K for work and then wanting reimbursed? If your building goes up in flames, who claims the TV? It isn’t an asset according to the books, so it doesn’t get replaced and the person won’t get his money back.

update: in order to prevent carpal tunnel, we will purchase trackballs and ergonomic mice/keyboards if requested. Might even spend the money on an ergo desk if you’re seasoned. So keyboards/mice aren’t an issue because we’ll provide them.

Mouse and keyboard? Inconsequential. Go ahead. Could there be some sneaky NSA spyware through the cable? Sure. But the moment someone claims that their doctor requires them to have a wireless keyboard and mouse so as not to agitate their tennis elbow (it’s come up), they are welcome to provide their own accessories. No actual computers, phones, or other devices that access company data. But I don’t care about keyboards and mice.

Sure. If it doesn’t work, I can’t do much but offer what I have, but that’s unlikely unless they’re broken. I’ve had a few people bring their own monitors too. I had 19" for them and they had 27" at home, so good for them.

Also, I use a mouse I bought. If I do that myself and don’t let anyone else, I’m just a jerk.

We have a new employee that was asking to bring in his own keyboard because he likes it and his old company allowed it.I think he said it was a MAC keyboard and we use PC’s here. So I am not real fond of the idea but I am getting push back from the users manager.

If it helps the employee work more efficiently and doesn’t cause any compatibility or integration issues I don’t see the harm for most peripherals. Obviously this comes with “within reason” caveats but I think as far as having mice/keyboard preferences, as long as they understand they are responsible for their own items and not me, bring what you want. I can certainly say with confidence that having a mouse with over 24 macro keys has improved my efficiency at certain tasks.

Yeah, we have some devs who have brought in their own mice/mech keyboards. I also purchased my own ergo mouse for work. It’s saving my wrist, that much is certain…

I can’t say I’ve tried an Apple keyboard on a PC, but they’re just USB, I don’t really see why it wouldn’t work. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it.

By the way, just to be that guy, the computers are a Mac.

I have used apple keyboards on a PC with no issues.

Keyboards and mice are OK in my book. I always warn that if it is there device its there problem.

I have also been known to ship back mice and keyboards back to terminated employees. (I am kind enough to remove the batteries)

sure, but the same rules apply as for bringing in a jacket or an umbrella… we don’t support it, we don’t fix it, we don’t take responsibility whatsoever.

No. We will provide requested keyboard, mouse, etc. If they have a mouse at home that they love, then we will buy them the same for work. It is cheap and avoids headaches down the road. We will not support any personal IT items.

We don’t stop them, but the only people that done anything like that are within the IT Team. (One guy, brought his own mouse = me!)

I have my own mouse, a Logitech G500, because it’s big enough for my hands (unlike the tiny HP mice we seem to get), and it’s got lots of bells and whistles on it that I like.

We take user requests and purchase whatever they may want. So far there have been no outrageous requests. Various wireless keyboard and mouse set ups etc. This user wants a Microsoft ergo keyboard, that user wants a Logitech ergo keyboard we get them what they want with minimal push back.

I’m liking these companies that actually care for their employees and get what they’re comfortable with… I thought this was a dying breed. Just gives me that sparkle of hope

I think it should be perfectly fine if any user wants to go buy their own keyboard and mouse for their own personal usage, as long as they understand it’s not paid for or reimbursed by the company. You just can’t start to cater to each individual.

If you did, it would next be the chair, the room carpet, the view, the desk, the phone, and so forth and so on. Personally I can’t stand these new keyboards arriving with the new computers. As others may actually like them. So I fully understand and get it. It’s pretty much the same allowance for making their area more comfortable and their own. Adding decorations, pictures, flowers and what have you.

I’m going to mail you guys free 64GB usb drives that kill computers :stuck_out_tongue:

Oooh…Ooooh… PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! I’ll just be your BFF always! :-p

I encourage the staff here to submit requests for the equipment they need.

We are a small shop and not bothered if someone wants a different mouse/keyboard for example.

They don’t get to choose anything except input devices in this way though.
