The most annoying question that EVERY USER ends up asking at one time or another.

Politely i usually reply “sorry i made it a policy to do NO side work because my free time is very valuable to me”

Get em all the time but when I mention my hourly rate is $125 those start to end really quickly

Sometimes, depends on how pretty she is!

I just did this for one of the partners at my firm. They brought in their laptop, which was infected with malware. I did this on company time, so, there was no charge from me. He was very happy, and gave me $50 in Outback gift cards! What a great dinner!

Most of the time I do and I often get paid in lager… essential in this current economic climate with a weak pound and an incredibly high UK tax on alcohol.

Get this all the time, twice so far today. I usually just say no, because it really cuts into my family time.

In some of the larger shops I’ve worked in, I’ve let a relatively junior tech do it. It gets that junior person to work with users in a less formal setting and builds trust in the user community. I make it clear when the request comes in that:

– Payment arrangements are between you and the tech

– The issue cannot come into the office.

– If it’s not a company owned machine or application, there is no company support.

I used to help the neighbors and Everyone in my Family and all of my friends. After a while I found that I was working at much at home if not more than I was at work. I now limit my after hours support to immediate family members only. I have also installed remote software on the computers so I can log on resolve issues for them at my convenience. I would stick to your current policy. As soon as you help somebody one time you are opening the Pandora’s box to help everyone. That’s my two cents.

With my always on “go away” face I am never asked!
Works!

LOL Orl!

I get them on occasion, I used to try to keep up with a few for some extra side money, but now that I have kids I would much rather spend my time at home with them (and giving my wife a break!).

For direct family only. (parents/siblings)

Go with one at work, the floodgates are open and you never get any sleep.

whats this thing you call… sleep ?

Yup, sure do. If I want to buy myself another toy I will take the work and spend the money as quick as I get it.

No I do not. I tell people that 8 hours of this stuff is plenty for me. I have to force myself once and awhile to even turn on the computer and check email at home.

I think there are some people who live, eat and breath this stuff and just can’t get enough of it (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but I’m not one of those people. It’s just a job for me.

That’s right! Posting in SW for 8 hrs can be very tiring!

family yes, out side of family she had better be very cute and very single

LOL I think there are some people who just might do that. It makes you wonder.

I could use Cole’s picture to get her excited but she’ll get dissapointed when we meet in person…

I highly doubt that. If she’s willing to hang out with a monkey, I bet you have a good chance
