Back at $job.old it was financially doable for sure, the only problem was that it wasn’t trusted by our FDIC auditors. I know quite a few people that can afford to implement it too, but they just either don’t know how and are too stubborn to learn, or are too prideful and won’t ask for help in learning.

We’re a small manufacturing plant, and it’s definitely a toss up when we need to look at new software or look at upgrading our current stuff. We’re migrating our ERP system into the cloud this summer, but it comes with more frequent updates, more support, and better performance over the system that runs our on-prem version. It’s definitely more expensive, but the new VAR is supposed to be leaning heavily into the “Value” part of “Value Added Reseller.”

We’ve also moved to Office 365 last year. When it makes sense for our workflow, we can justify the extra cost of the cloud. But there are certainly occasions where the cloud option is prohibitively expensive for us.

VMware was too expensive for us at the library and we switched to something else much more affordable. We are not looking to switch back.

The cloud, in general, is expensive but you’re paying to be on the forefront of where things are all going. Right now it’s much more financially feasible to do a mixture of both cloud and on-prem and as costs even out in the future, you can start to slowly - but smartly - migrate.

I, personally, haven’t found a cloud option that can compete with the complexity and longevity of a few physical servers like we currently have.

I think it can be HARD to know for sure if it will be too expensive. Because of the pay for what you use model it feels hard to predict. Might be attractive if I wasn’t an IT pro who derives his income on supporting hardware, but perhaps a business leader might not mind the higher cost knowing they will need fewer of me to support them?! It also depends on how you plan to use it. I know I have a large file share I would love to make available through cloud services, but doing a basic windows share through a cloud provider might be expensive but I bet there is somewhere for me to do this…

There seems to be a range of costs. For security and reliability the price does get out of my budget range. I can afford cloud services from some questionable entities, but I’m not going that route!

Yes to expensive, but we are small enough that we don’t have much of a cloud presence at this time.
