Hi, I have 14TB QNAP Storage. I want to configure the NAS with iSCSI for two separated purposes.
- 10TB - The primary datastore for 2 ESXi node in DR site
- 4 TB - datastore for 1 ESXi node for the LAB test.
Which of the follow configuration is suggested/the best?
a) create ONLY ONE iSCSI target with two separated mapped LUNs
b) create TWO SEPARATED iSCSI target and each iSCSI target has only one mapped LUN
Thank you very much for your answers.

Always opt for simplicity if there are no security concerns. One target then map your LUNs.
I suppose it’s a matter of personal preference though.

You can only go for option a as you’ve only one iSCSI target - the QNAP.

Just to be REALLY clear because understanding this is how you keep from having disasters: you are talking about a SAN here, not a NAS. iSCSI is SAN only.

I completely agree. Another thing to account for is that even if you turn that NAS into a SAN, it will only be good for storing backups and in no way running a production.
When it comes to making a choice from the two options you have provided, to squeeze the maximum performance from a single RAID array, I would definitely select B.

What did you end up with finally?

I created only one iSCSI target with two separated LUNs
