I just added it to our desktop admin’s check list when building a new machine. We are having an issue with some computers (specifically Elitebook 8770w and Folio 9470m) when they are in their docking stations their ethernet is not prioritizing over wireless.
The NIC has an ethernet address.
I have gone in the Network Adapter and made the Local Area Connection at the top of the list for priority.
I have even tried adjusting the metrics.
Nothing has worked. Anyone else experiencing this?

Have you tried to enable LAN/WAN switching in the BIOS?

I did not know this was an option, what is it exactly?

When you have this enabled, it disables wireless when you plug in an Ethernet cable. It does the opposite when you remove it.

Perfect, I will try that.
Thanks.
Check the BIOS for settings related to ‘Enable LAN/WLAN switching’ should solve your issue.

I’ve had issues with this in the past. Although we’ve had a few Elitebooks in the past, the main culprit for us has been HP Wireless Assistant. The cases that I can recall either did not have the HPWA or it was really outdated.

Agree to check the BIOS settings but also remove the HP Wireless Assistant. It screws with Windows built-in utility and can cause a lot of issues, from what I’ve seen. So rip it out and then any windows settings will take priority.
Thanks,
A.J.

Strongly disagree with removing HPWA. It was initially removed as part of getting rid of bloatware, however it was soon discovered it was needed for the reasons stated.

FYI: I had to update my Elitebook’s BIOS to get this functionality…

Another thing to look into is your power settings. I have had power settings enabled previously that allowed the system to disable the Ethernet port on low power, or on battery, and had trouble auto-enabling following the reconnect, automatically. I found that disabling this power management feature helped with similar issues.

also try this,
assuming windows 7/vista
go to network and sharing → change adapter settings–> press the alt key (if no menu bar) and the go to advanced–> advanced settings.
Move the wired connection to the top of the list. that should prioritize the wired connection.
Also if it is an HP it should have the Wlan/Lan switch available in the bios. that should shut off the “wifi only” when the machine has a hard wire connection.

You also can set the priority for which NIC to be used within the OS.
Just go to : Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections. Click on Organize > Layout > select Menu Bar
Now you notice you have the normal menu options. Click on Advanced > Advanced Settings.
Now the windows will display all your NICs which then you can move them up the order or down the order which the OS will utilize.
I like this option better because as the user goes to undock then their software that is connected to the network don’t get interrupted due to the fact the wireless is still connected.
