The article on emotional intelligence- Emotional intelligence: The secret to advancing in your IT career - Spiceworks - focuses on how to advance your career, on promoting oneself. For me, emotional intelligence is more about improving the quality of life for myself and those around me, how we can all flourish together. We can’t all climb to the top of a tree but we can all stand together around the tree!

Very true. I think that emotional intelligence does help you get promoted, because people notice your ability to maintain calm under pressure, etc., but I think you are right that the core reason for sticking in there and learning it is to improve yourself and help the people around you. The getting a promotion is more of a side effect of being a better, more awesome friend to others, rather than the reason that you become that.
I know I still have a long way to go on that journey, but definitely worth it.

well, if your superiors don’t grasp the idea of emotional intelligence, you can be top of the list in e.i. and it won’t give you any advantage in being promoted.
and as we all have experienced once or twice, middle-management and above seem to lack i.e., that’s how they got there.

Totally with you on that. Emotional intelligence isn’t just about getting ahead, it’s about creating a better work (life) environment for everyone. When people feel heard and respected, the whole team wins.

I like this framing a lot. People often respond to incentives, but those incentives can take different forms.

Well said @mariale-pulseway and @RedKite60! Exercising emotional intelligence should benefit most facets of our lives and those around us.
