I’ve set up USMT on our Config manager and although it does kind of work it is not especially great.
if someone out there can hint on optimizing the USMT XMLs its much appreciated !!
Our users data are already on OneDrive but I want to get the full “User Experience” like Desktop, quick-links, browser favorites and possibly browser cached passwords. That did work once I recall.
And perhaps as an option, grab the Downloads folder
Most importantly though it is to make sure NO data sitting outside the users profile is lost!
Today we check manually that nothing is lost, lurking outside the user profile, and move over important things other than data.
We then store the old harddrive/PC at PC replacements.
When re-installing, we create a snapshot of the whole disk and store it for safety.
Both processes are very time consuming but needed as we are a state office.
I want to make sure we have everything moved over when re-installing through CM and also look for a way to backup/restore users settings at replacements.
9 Spice ups
Regarding the SCCM user profile backup/restore it is most certainly using USMT and if you haven’t done anything to improve it, USMT will be doing really bad job as Microsoft has not done much updating the accompanying XML files for it for years.
You will be able to find custom XML’s for use with USMT that are far better updated to Windows 10/11. Go check Ehlertech’s homepage where I always download fresh XML files for USMT for free. There’s even a Blog post there on how to be Using custom XML files in USMT & SCCM.
For user profile transfers from one PC to a new one, again check Ehlertech’s tools. In this case I’d go with UPC which is what we use.
Latest User Profile Central edition now also offers to build a Disk snapshot (VHD file) of the system drive, along with the user profile backup.
