My client has an NVME she’s trying to extract data from, but when plugging it into another Windows laptop via USB, the disk won’t initialize, rather giving an error saying, “Incorrect Function.” I tried looking at it through Diskpart and there are no primary readings of any size:

List volume just shows the recovery partition:

EaseUS couldn’t find anything besides the recovery as well.

Any ideas?

4 Spice ups

Is it encrypted?

Was it configured in RAID or AHCI in BIOS settings?

What happened to it for them to need to recover from it?

I will assume from your screenshots, this is Disk 1.

It’s a single NVME from a laptop. Would it matter if it was under ahci or raid when connecting it via USB?

No encryption to my knowledge, but the original laptop couldn’t read it either, hence removal and recovery.

And yes, disk 1. Lmk

If the previous laptop was unable to read it, there is a chance the drive is dead.

My first thought also. Maybe not entirely dead, but functionally so.

If it was a Dell laptop then it probably was RAID in the laptop (dell likes to send out laptops with that configuration in the BIOS) which means if you try to do a clean install of the OS it won’t see the drive.
As it is showing as 0 B in diskpart then either the Master boot record has been corrupted or indead the device has failed.

Check the laptop warranty status - may be capable of gettting repaired.
Other option to try and recover files is to boot a PC from a linux USB and use file/disk recovery utilities to try and fix the drive.

That drive has failed. She should be ‘extracting data’ from the backups, not the dead drive.
You’re unlikely to find any data recovery software that will read anything from this drive since it shows up as zero bytes.
Best would be to send it to a data recovery company. They can remove the memory chip and access it directly bypassing issues with a failed controller or other failed components on the circuit.
I have the name of a really good company in Canada if you need one.

Sure, what’s their name? We live in the States so lmk if that’s feasible.

I sent you a private message because i feel like I got called out one time when posting a company name here

I have a flyer but i couldn’t see how to attach it so i just sent you the phone number
