I’ve been working on this for a couple of days, I’m hoping someone can help me out or at least point me in the right direction. I have a VNXe3100, two month ago it crashed and burned completely. Three drives failed all at once and I ended up having to send the drives off to a data recovery company to get my data back. Well I finally got my data back and I now have all new drives, how do I go about setting this box up now with all new drives? I have already put the box in service mode and I’ve tried running the svc_reinit command via SSH but it failed with the following error:
Could not stat /dev/mirrora4 — No such file or directory
The device apparently does not exist; did you specify it correctly?
ERROR: Failed to recreate service partition on peer!
Any suggestions?

you should be able to rerun the initial setup disk. It will reinitialize the drives and create the appropriate partitions.
did any of your system drives die? if so you will need to recreate the partition structure. Once up and running you can restore the data.

The three drives that failed are the ones that the OS for the box were installed on, according to EMC tech support anyways. I’ll look online to see if I can find the manual and run the initial setup. Thanks!
you will defiantly need to do a reinstall, How odd that 3 died… got to love EMC…lol
Its pretty straightforward , grab the last set of installs from EMC, burn to disk pop-in and boot.
It will ask some basic questions like IP, password etc… It will run a health check and inventory.
The process itself takes several hours. If you not familiar wit the VNXe’s setting you should try to get those before starting the reinit.
Here is the link https://download.emc.com/downloads/DL68929_VNXe-Operating-Environment-(MR4-SP4.2---2.4.4.22499).gpg?source=OLS you will need an EMC login to access it.
Just be wary 3 drives failing all at once could have been a bad batch, or may suggest a more fundamental issue other than drives - such as backplane etc.

Enviromentals are something else to watch.
You lost the vault drives? Ouch, I would call EMC about that.
Hi Robert,
If you have a support contract you should log an SR with support for any advice or help.
I’d also recommend visiting www.emc.com/vnxesupport You’ll find documentation and quick start guides there that may be able to help you.
Let me or Emily know if we can assist further!

Hi A_ride_4_ever,
Do you mean to burn VNXe-MR4SP4.2-upgrade-2.4.4.22499-RETAIL.tgz.bin.gpg to CD ?

Hi Ceci for EMC UK,
Can anything be done if there is no service contract for the unit ?
i might have sent you the wrong link, You should find the full init dvd on the support site. Burn it to DVD/CD put it int he drive and boot. With 3 missing vault drives its the only way this VNXe will come back to life. Or a set of vault drives can be ordered from EMC, it will cost a fortune but its another option w/o a support contract.
Welcome to Spiceworks, @ivannanev !
If you create an account on support.emc.com , you may be able to access the required instructions and/or software you need. However, I recommend contacting EMC support directly for advice before downloading anything.
Hope that helps! If you have any questions about your unit, I’m happy to assist

What Ceci says, TBH I have done it several times so to me its pretty straight forward, If your unsure or don’t want to risk it You might be better served contacting EMC and in the worst case you could purchase a small support contract from someone like ParkPlace .

Hi Ceci for EMC UK,
I already have an account with EMC(I can download the files and search documents). I am a network architect for a cloud service and I bough my VNXe3100 3rd party to learn more about EMC. Unfortunately the seller made it look like it has the VAULT drives, but it didn’t. I did replaces the VAULT drives with 300GB 15K EMC hdds, but neither “svc_reimage” nor “svc_reinit” can rebuild the VAULT structure.
P.S. I did try to call EMC support number, but before I can even tell them what the issue is they told me that I need a contract.

Hi A_ride_4_ever,
The VNXe doesn’t have a CD-ROM drive and I don’t see any VNXe file that can be burned to a CD. Maybe you are talking for another EMC product.

A_ride_4_ever, yes that is my post.
Hi Ivan - I will have to touch base with support on Monday to get more information, since most of our team here in the UK has already gone home. If you’re in North America, @emilyforemc may also be able to help.
Have there been any specific error messages?

yes, confusing the VNXe 3100 and my NX4, I’ve redone the VNXe recently, I’m looking for the doc now on getting the OE re-initialized

Hi Ceci,
The service_hint is 0xFC0B0300. I couldn’t find anything on the EMC support site about that code.
Hi Ivan, Here’s what I was able to find out:
It does sound like you’ll need to purchase some form of support contract to get additional help, so you might want to discuss that with your seller. In the meantime, here are a couple of posts that may help:
