Like any online community, we have our share of in-jokes and memes going. These can be confusing to newcomers, so here is a FAQ to bring you up to speed. If I’ve missed any, feel free to add them in the comments and I’ll pull them into this post:

  • SpiceHeads - the name chosen by the community to refer to Spiceworks users.

  • Spicy Peppers - SpiceHeads who are Thai and higher.

  • SpiceRex - our official mascot. He was created by akp982 and has his own forum with more info here . He travels the world visiting SpiceHeads, and you can buy your very own plush SpiceRex .

  • Spice-ups - Clicking the pepper at the top of a post “spices it up.” Spice-ups are important because they indicate worthwhile content, not only to SpiceHeads but also to our internal algorithms, so please spice-up things you like.

  • Using the word “spice” all the time - just as the Smurfs loving to use the word “smurf,” we are in love with the word “spice.” Spiceworks, SpiceWorld, SpiceHeads, Spicy Peppers - soon you’ll be using it all the time.

  • Spiceworks tattoo - yes it is real. eWoman loved nemoreid 's sticker design so much that she got it made permanent.

  • Totally Random Thread - the longest running thread in the community, with more than 35,000 posts in it. People post random things in there just to keep the thread going.

  • Green Guys/Gals (GG) - Official vendor representatives’ names appear in green.

  • Orange Guys/Gals (OG) - Names of Spiceworks employees, a.k.a. SpiceWorkers, appear in orange.

  • Bacon , Zombies , and Unicorns - These memes are not unique to Spiceworks, but they do get referenced a lot. IT pros love bacon, zombies, unicorns, narwhals, and other awesome things and mythical beasts.

  • Badgers - You can get your very own badger badge by taking your picture with a badger and posting it in the Totally Random Thread**.** Badgers have become popular on the Internet due to these two videos:

  • Banhammer - Again, this isn’t specific to us, but since we run a forum the word does get referred to a lot. See here for the definition . It gets used when people don’t adhere to the community guidelines .

  • [content removed by moderator] - When I have to use my banhammer and edit a post, I’ll substitute this phrase so that people know that something was removed for being inappropriate. People have taken to putting it in their posts for a joke to pretend that I had to edit their post.

  • How to ask better questions - Good advice from Scott Alan Miller and KenBurgess .

  • Getting PSXed: PSX_Defector is a lovely fellow who loves to post wildly inappropriate stories that I have to delete with my banhammer. To get PSXed has come to mean engaging in wild drunken adventures.

  • Contests - We have lots of contests for all sorts of things, such as designing ads , designing posters , writing haiku , and sharing funny pictures . Make sure you follow our blog to get notified when they happen.

  • Scott Alan Miller is more than one person - Scott Alan Miller (a.k.a. SAM) is one of our most prolific community members. People have speculated that he is multiple people posting under one account .

  • Who is to blame this week? We have handy lists so that you always know who is at fault:

  • Huw , the resident Spiceworks Troubadour, on how to ask a good question

  • Sarah started a thread for funny things overheard at Spiceworks HQ . We also have a Funny Pictures thread.

That would be way too often  However, know that the fro will put in an appearance at SpiceWorld 2011 so that is more incentive for you to come.

Nice write up. I had to search to figure out what you crazy people were talking about for a while. Nice to see some won’t have to…

Thanks for sharing that! I had figured out most of those. The only one that I really wasn’t sure about was PSX’d. My guess was close enough, but nice to hear the back story on that one.

Sorry, I couldn’t mention everyone. Don’t take this as a challenge to become the next PSX

Clearly, you do not grok in fullness the concept of an In joke.

I must admit I was starting to wonder what the big deal was with badgers - flying phalangers I could understand!
