Currently have a Windows Server 2012 R2 file server running on my old Hyper-V host. I’m looking to upgrade the file server to Windows Server 2025 and move it to my new Hyper-V host. File server has two virtual disks: OS-disk1 and Data-disk2. Over all I’m not concerned about anything on the OS-disk1. I’m wondering if it would be easier to create a brand new 2025 file server on the new Hyper-V host and just attached the Data-disk2 to it vs upgrading the old server to 2016 then 2025 and moving everything to the new Hyper-V host. Thoughts?<\/p>","upvoteCount":4,"answerCount":2,"datePublished":"2025-04-30T19:21:43.715Z","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Aaron7832","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Aaron7832"},"suggestedAnswer":[{"@type":"Answer","text":"

That works just fine, retains the NTFS settings and is very quick, just ensure you have solid backups before you do this.<\/p>","upvoteCount":3,"datePublished":"2025-04-30T19:44:37.221Z","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/t/file-server-upgrade-hyper-v/1201472/2","author":{"@type":"Person","name":"Rod-IT","url":"https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Rod-IT"}}]}}
