I have a user who is having issues saving to a shared drive. He has full access all the way through the file structure but is still not able to save. I just had him try a reboot to see if the all the permissions didn’t get carried over as it is a new mapped drive. In case this doesn’t work what else should I look at to get him to save to this location. And he was able to save to this folder at one point.

Can the user save the same file with a different name to that directory? If so it sounds like the file is locked as in more than one person or service is accessing it simultaneously so a save is not allowed but it does allow read access. Rebooting the users PC would not resolve that problem. Rebooting the server with the file share should break all open connections to the file but you should be able to diagnose who is accessing the file without having to do that.

Sorry I forgot to mention I had him open a blank word doc and save it there and it still gave the same error.
Assuming this is a Windows based question.
Might be something simple, but check to make sure your user has appropriate access at the file level, and at the share level. It looks like reading your post he has the file level permissions, but if you are using a shared folder, he will need access to that too. Also any permissions that deny him access will override any allow permissions. You may want to check if he is a member of a group with deny permissions.
For example if he is a member of Group A and Group B and group B is not allowed in your folder, then he won’t get access to the folder.

Did you force permissions on files/folders from the top down? Try creating a new folder after doing to so and seeing if he can save to that folder. Also, make sure that the Share privileges are allowing full control to the group/user.
Nothing has changed as far as permissions go, as I said he was been able to save to it before. I just mapped the drive this morning again and after that he was not able to save to it.

Did you have him sign into a different machine? Did you test logging into his pc and saving to the same location?
I can save to that folder just fine when I log in.
Did you check the rights on the Share?

What does the effective permissions say?
Even if “nothing has changed”, I would go in and explicitly look at the permissions at both the share level and the NTFS level and make sure both of them allow write access for the user, and that there are no block permissions to groups s/he is a member of. If either is set to read only, or if there’s a block on write access (remembering that block trumps allow) the behavior will match the symptoms you’re describing.

Check the cached credentials on his computer, it could be storing an old password or something. Just a thought.

Do you have any quotas enabled?
I have checked every folder from where the file share starts to where he is saving the file and they all have full control on them. ( I did not change anything)
I would check the sharing permissions to verify that the user has correct permissions to the share.

This is definitely good advice - “any permissions that deny him access will override any allow permissions”
What are the security settings on the folder he/she can’t access, it might help others to to diagnose your issue?(Remember to redact any sensitive info! )

I would test each folder from the top of the file structure on down to see where the problem starts at. Then remove and recreate his permissions there.

What is his DNS server set to ?
If it is not an authoritative DNS server in the domain. Permissions fall back to file level , and you will not get shares to work.
Have you checked configuration of both NTFS and Share permissions?
To make sure permissions are set and effective you can use free Netwrix Effective Permissions Reporting tool
