This post is from today’s Reddit discussion.
I got a call today from one of our clients who work on an RDS server. The sysadmin onsite said Office 2016 couldn’t be activated for some reason, this is what they received: “Sorry, this feature has been disabled by your administrator”. I was asked to investigate.
Okay, that’s interesting… I wonder what that could be. Checked permissions, GPO, etc, googling suggests editing some registry crap, no degraded services in 365…hmmm.
This error message totally put me on the wrong path to look for issues, because IT WAS A DNS ISSUE. This could totally be fixed in a minute, but it took me almost 2 hours instead. The RDS server didn’t have 2nd DNS server configured and the primary didn’t do a good job at resolving.
Ah well…glad it’s fixed now. I still need to get a shirt printed that says: Windows - It’s always DNS!

Hahaha that’s kinda funny! And yes it’s usually DNS…
At a former company, it was the web filter, it was always the web filter.
Spent a hour at home the other night trying to figure out why my connection was having issue loading web pages.
Google’s DNS was having issues.

Hahaha. I love that haiku. I can’t even count how many times those exact thoughts went through my head.
And in the spirit of haikus, here is my favorite:
Haikus are easy.
But sometimes they don’t make sense.
