Hello, Spiceworks. Happy April Fools’ and all that.
I’d like recommendations for a secure file share server that I can host in-house (if you say the “C” word, I’ll tear the eraser nub off your pencil!), with a self-service web portal for all of user account creation/password resets, and for adding/removing files and folders. I also need granular folder and file access control, so that only file creators and their designees (designate-ees?) can access given files/folders. I also don’t particularly want the security of this server to be integrated with my domain.
Basically, emailing Huge, Sensitive Documents™ is a bad idea, and I’m not about to blindly roll my own FTP server. What have the Spiceheads used to solve file sharing woes securely?

we use filezilla at our hospital and it works
I feel like it’s bad form to respond first as a green guy here as I know you’re really looking for the input of true IT brains. But… it does seem like ownCloud could be a great fit for your requirements and is used by many as FTP replacement. It’s on-premise–your server–and has several options for access/control. It’s available in two flavors: ownCloud Server (free thanks to our open source community contributors) and Enterprise Edition ($). There is a comparison of the two at Find the right edition - ownCloud
And I do know that we’ve got the endorsement of lots of Spiceheads…

Indeed! Thanks, Kelley. I don’t mind Green replies, I am, after all, shopping here.
I’ll PM you.
Hello David -
Echoing Kelley’s sentiments here as well in terms of green guys! As you progress through your search, please check out SmartFile. SmartFile does offer a highly secure on-premise file sharing solution that you can host behind your network firewall, and fulfill all of the requirements you listed. We do offer a very intuitive web interface for all account creations (and password resets, full account management, etc), as well as content (and folder structure) creation and modification. SmartFile also offers the ability to create very granular permission and access scenarios for users in the solution, to only provide access to relevant content. For domain purposes, you can customize as you wish.
If you would like more information, feel free to PM me (love to hear your envisioned use case in more detail) or you can find more relevant information at www.SmartFile.com/enterprise . Best of luck in your search!

Hi David,
You might want to check our FileCloud ( http://www.getfilecloud.com ) solution. It is an on-premise file sharing solution that you can self-host on windows or linux servers. If you would like more information please feel free to message me.
I’d like to throw in Egnyte Storage Connect to the mix. It allows your users to access on-premise files while adhering to granular-level permission controls (honors CIFS file/folder permissions on the share). Besides it allows for the admin to have a centralized user/group management layer to add/modify user credentials.
