Hello,
I am not an IT expert but I am not totally thick either although I feel out of my depth here.
I want to start with a small, easy ( oh yeah ! ) setup with just two computers but I would also want my satellite box and my TV to be on my network map. These are Wifi connected to my router but when I am asked for credentials I just don’t know what is required.
I do not have a login for each device, I just have the login provided by my ISP and a security key for my router.
I must be missing something quite basic but what ?
Any help you can offer will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I guess you are talking about getting your home devices scanned and inventoried by SpiceWorks. If that is the case, remember that devices that to not have a standard type of login needs to support SNMP for SpiceWorks to figure out stuff on its own.
If your gear lacks support for SNMP you would need to create the devices in SpiceWorks by yourself.
Thanks for that, I do have SNMP support but I still cannot inventory my devices.
Any ideas ?

If you have SNMP community strings for the devices in question, you should be able to scan them with Spiceworks. Can you run an SNMPWalk against the devices you’re trying to scan?
Unfortunately it didn’t work.
I used the IP address and this was the result :-
Executing Snmpwalk of device
‘snmpwalk’ is not recognised as an internal or external command.
I don’t think I missed anything but I will try again later.

OK I had another try, different result but does not seem helpful.

Looks like those devices don’t fully support SNMP.
They may only be capable of SNMP Traps, which Spiceworks doesn’t handle
Thanks for the reply but I don’t know what SNMP Traps are.
The device I am trying to have recognised is a desktop PC running Windows 8.1, surely this is about as
basic as it gets.
What will happen when I want my satellite box and my TV recognised ?

Ok… so this is a Windows PC you’re running at home, along with your satellite box, and your TV?
Scanning in a Windows device uses a different protocol than networked devices. You’ll want to take a look here:
http://community.spiceworks.com/help/Resolving_Unknown_Devices
Thanks for that but I have looked through lots of the help with no success.
I don’t quite understand this as both the desktop pcs’ are Windows and both on my network.

Yes, I have been through that as best I could.
Just as a matter of interest I ran TNM and it immediately recognised all 5 of my devices.

So when you ran the troubleshooting WMI steps, what were the results?
Access was denied with whatever combination I tried.
Obviously I haven’t done this correctly but if I knew how to do all this I wouldn’t need to ask these questions.

Thanks for the help - I ran the tool on both m/c’s but the subsequent scan still did not recognise the device.

Once installed, did you get green on all sections?
Yes on the Spiceworks m/c but the m/c I am trying to discover was yellow for the Windows firewall which should not be a problem.
regards
Can you open up the firewall up on the machine you are trying to discover? The fact that you were getting Access Denied messages when running WMIC commands is usually firewall related.
I have switched off the firewall and turned off the UAC but I still have the same msgs on the m/c to be discovered.
On the Spiceworks m/c it says " Everything looks good! Try scanning this device from the Spiceworks UI ".
So I did that but the m/c is still not recognised.
I think I am getting one of my headaches !
