Howdy Spiceheads! Happy World Password Day! In honor of this day we are going to go over some password strategies and best practices. Highlights are below.
Top best password practices
- Use unique passwords, use long passwords, include upper and lower case letters, numbers, and (when possible) extended characters like “#”, “$”, and “&”.
- If you need help generating good passwords, you can always use our strong password generator.
Three things to help improve your overall password security
-
Get a password manager
-
A password manager can generate long, complex passwords and store them on a site-by-site basis. This makes it possible for you to have long, complex, unique passwords for every site.
-
Check to see what, if any, passwords have been leaked
-
The odds are good that you’ve had passwords stolen or leaked from one of the various data breaches , password thefts, and leaks that have happened over the past few years.
-
There are now searchable online databases that will tell you what passwords are known to have been leaked or stolen.- Change the passwords or close those accounts on any sites whose passwords have leaked.
-
If you find that your password for a site has been lost or stolen, that means that password may be in the hands of attackers and for sale on the internet.
-
As you go through to each site where your password information has been lost or stolen, you can use your password manager to come up with a new, more secure password for that site.

How about using passphrases? NIST’s special publication 800-63B at NIST Special Publication 800-63B is often cited for considering a new approach to passwords.
Probably mostly useful for situations where you need to actually type in a password/phrase such as logging into your computer. Password managers and their random generators come in great to manage our myriad of website logins where we don’t even need to know the passwords anymore and let the manager handle those (ideally coupled with MFA on top of it).
