If the disk is spinning you’ll feel it vibrating. Try plugging it into a USB enclosure and seeing if it’s actually spinning, the hardware could be dead.

I am using SATA to USB and nothing.

If you are comfortable with Linux you can connect the SATA drive internally and use a live linux boot. Then, if the drive isn’t seen it’s a physical problem. If that’s the case, then you have to figure if it’s worth data recovery. If you call DriveSavers then you can refer to DS98006 for a SpiceWorks discount. If you have any other USB enclosures, try a few and use the power cable if it has one in case the USB power isn’t enough. Hope you gain access.

Do as Mike says and at the same time have a look at the SMART data for it if it is seen so that will tell you what state it is in.

works

“works”. So you have got the data off? If so that is a success.

It means the HDD is likely 99% dying…the 1% chance it works, get all the data you can get off it before it dies off completely.

On Windows go to Control Panel → Small icons → Administrative tools → Computer Management → Disk Management and see if the hard drive shows up there.

Quicker way: Type compmgmt.msc in the start menu (or copy and paste) → Disk Management. I know this may be basic for some but not everybody would know that.

OR using a Mac… Open Disk utilities.

Besides that the SATA to USB might not be getting enough power.

If the drive is spinning and not visible in the computer, then it could be corrupted. You can see the drive in ‘Device Manager’ of your computer. To recover data from this drive, you can use Kernel for Windows Data Recovery - Free version software. It is free to use software and save up to 2 GB of data for free. If the drive can be “seen” by the OS, but not readable - that is, it is spinning, but not delivering data, it is possible you could recover the drive using SpinRite. I have had success in nearly 90% of these cases using it. Run the recovery and once its done, if you can read the drive, get the data you need off onto another drive, and retire the culprit.

You can more about Spinrite at www.grc.com
