If the disk is spinning you’ll feel it vibrating. Try plugging it into a USB enclosure and seeing if it’s actually spinning, the hardware could be dead.

{"@type":"Person
Gary-D-Williams
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/Gary-D-Williams"}},{"@type":"Answer

If you are comfortable with Linux you can connect the SATA drive internally and use a live linux boot. Then, if the drive isn’t seen it’s a physical problem. If that’s the case, then you have to figure if it’s worth data recovery. If you call DriveSavers then you can refer to DS98006 for a SpiceWorks discount. If you have any other USB enclosures, try a few and use the power cable if it has one in case the USB power isn’t enough. Hope you gain access.

{"@type":"Person
mike-drivesavers
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/mike-drivesavers"}},{"@type":"Answer

Do as Mike says and at the same time have a look at the SMART data for it if it is seen so that will tell you what state it is in.

{"@type":"Person
peterw2300
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/peterw2300"}},{"@type":"Answer

“works”. So you have got the data off? If so that is a success.

{"@type":"Person
peterw2300
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/peterw2300"}},{"@type":"Answer

It means the HDD is likely 99% dying…the 1% chance it works, get all the data you can get off it before it dies off completely.

{"@type":"Person
adrian_ych
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/adrian_ych"}},{"@type":"Answer

On Windows go to Control Panel → Small icons → Administrative tools → Computer Management → Disk Management and see if the hard drive shows up there.

Quicker way: Type compmgmt.msc in the start menu (or copy and paste) → Disk Management. I know this may be basic for some but not everybody would know that.

OR using a Mac… Open Disk utilities.

Besides that the SATA to USB might not be getting enough power.

{"@type":"Person
kanthony
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/kanthony"}},{"@type":"Answer

If the drive is spinning and not visible in the computer, then it could be corrupted. You can see the drive in ‘Device Manager’ of your computer.
