It’s an interesting time to have a musical topping the box office charts.

Just like your IT environment, musicals thrive on coordinated efforts including the collaboration of various individuals, from actors and singers to stage techs, and orchestra members, contributing their expertise to create a harmonious and captivating performance. Speaking of harmony, modern IT solutions can orchestrate a similar symphony in your infrastructure, enabling seamless remote management and enhanced security, much like a well-coordinated musical production

All the buzz made me remember the couple of musicals I was in back in high school. Whether you’ve taken center stage or worked behind the scenes, participating in a musical can be quite a memorable experience.

We all know there’s a lot of talented folks in the Spiceworks Community! We’d love to hear if you’ve ever been involved in a musical, either on stage or backstage? We’d love to hear all about it!

Have You Ever Participated in a Musical?
  • Yes, I’ve performed on stage!
  • Yes, I’ve worked in theater tech for a production!
  • No, but mostly because I never had the opportunity.
  • Nope, and wouldn’t be caught dead in one.
  • Something else. (Share more with a reply!)

Elementary school production of The Wizard of Oz. I was a munchkin.

I was going to ask if elementary school counted.
I was in Annie. My part was probably the shortest part in the play. I was a G-Man.

I was a theater tech in High School. Built sets and did the lighting mostly.

Technically I guess? I did a school play when I was a kid but could barely get my lines out because I could not stop laughing due to nerves. My wife sings a lot, she has enough star power for the both of us haha.

For our very serious purposes, it totally counts.

Yes, I knew we’d have some theater techs on here. I bet that was a lot of fun!

I have performed on stage, but it was with a drama team; we did skits, not musicals

I was in pit bands for a couple in hs, but then jr and sr year I was actually onstage. Lil Abner and Carnival.

Back in elementary school was in the Mikado and HMS Pinafore.

HS production for me. I was one of the (many) Generals of the OZian Army who order around the only Private, as well as ran Lighting.

In JR High I was in The Sound of Music (Spotlight operator).

In HS I was also in Once Upon a Mattress (I helped Fred out of the moat, and ran Sound), Fiddler on the Roof (ran Sound), and Annie (Student Manager / ran Sound).

I was the elementary choral director. We would show choir which was a lot of fun. I’ve also been in many pit orchestras, been the voice coach and soundman.

Shortly after high school, the small town I lived in had a community theater group that would perform musicals every year. I got to play Tuba in the orchestra for Sound Of Music, Oklahoma, and Fiddler on the Roof. I had fun every year doing this and do miss it when I moved away.

Played multiple instruments in the orchestras for multiple high school theatre productions back in my younger years.

I have, actually! I was Cinderella in our high school production of “Into the Woods”

TLC and I did sound engineering and sound FX for five years at the Waterville Operahouse (about 30 shows), and I played guitar in the pit band for five shows.

I was in choir in grade school, but that’s about it.

I don’t think being in bands on stage as an adult counts.

Played in the pit orchestra for three musicals in high school.

Too many credits to list or even remember them all individually …

  • various shows and rolls during my primary school years - usually something every year … the only one I specifically recall at the moment our class acting out stuff in “The Unicorn Song” by The Irish Rovers and I played the part of Noah.
  • various stuff at or through church over the years. One I do recall was in my late teens - I was Travis in “Hi-Tops” (a boy soprano who auditions with a bass voice because he’s got a cold). It was based on this film.
  • 3 musicals with a local acting society in Gisborne, NZ - Helper #1 in “The Pyjama Game” (got to do my own stunt work … and almost joined the cellist in the orchestra pit on one occasion!), Bush Ortree (a non-committal cowboy) in “That’s Western!” (a locally written comedy musical - lots of puns and fun!) in which I lead the singing of “Jingle, Jangle, Jingle”, and one of the brothers (I’ve forgotten which one) in “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”.
  • I was also Zebulun in a production of “Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat” in Wellington, NZ that never actually made it to the stage due to a lack of financial backing (despite months of rehearsals). (Not my only acting disappointment - I also got cast as a school teacher in a NZ feature film that didn’t make it past casting due to a lack of funding. :disappointed: )

All in all, a lot of fun!

Incidentally, one of the guys that I performed with in “That’s Western!” went on to be in one of the “Lord of The Rings” movies.

I’ve also been back stage, front of house, and tech crew for various other ones.

Auditioned senior year HS for Jesus Christ Superstar. Nailed the audition but there were too many legacy members of the club (this was my first time) so I didn’t get a named part.

Instead I played/sang ~10 different parts (many rapid costume changes) and taught lines to almost the entire cast (I grew up watching/singing it).

Had a great time, but wasn’t really in love with performing/acting so it was my only time as part of a musical. I really wanted to be part of the pit, but they never needed a trombone so it didn’t work out.

Some tunes never leave you - they keep ear worming at irregular intervals
