Hello Spiceheads,

I have many friends and coworkers who I try to bring to the community. I explain to them why I like it and how great a resource it is to have over a million IT Professionals all in one place who can answer questions and help troubleshoot.

However, no one seems interested. I get the occasional “cool” or “awesome” as a reply, yet no one ever follows through and checks out the community.

I understand that not everyone would be interested because it is an IT community, but I really thought my coworkers would take advantage of this amazing resource.

Any suggestions as to how I could “sell” them on the idea that this community the “friggen awesome” and they are truly missing out?

Get them out to your local SpiceCorps meetings! Once they get a taste of the swag & beer, they’ll be hooked!

I tried that too… No one was interested in go carts or tacos… I do extend the invite each time there is an event.

I’ve had the biggest success with tools the community offers.

Play sales rep! Networking Monitor is amazing, and don’t just tell them, show them!! Helpdesk too. Fantastic apps. Great community. Great support. That’s the trifecta in IT.

Send em here next time they are banging their head on the keyboard over the same problem for a few hours. It sold me. amazed and humbled in short order.

“Spiceworks and HP gave it to me.”

“What???”

“Yeah, my daughters computer and that Axial Yeti over there came through spiceworks also…”

“WHAT!?!?!”

Well, you’re leading the horse to the water…

I have had the same struggle. I guess until people see firsthand how the community benefits them, they won’t be convinced that they need it.

I’m glad my boss made me sign up my first day in IT.

I’ve not had much luck either, but i’m really the only IT pro in my group. Most of them are in tech-related jobs, but not really one the community would be much help for.

Don’t sell it. If they don’t want. Let them. Just keep talking about it until they get curious.

They seem interested when I tell them, but they never seem to find the time to create an account and check it out for them selves.

Contests:
I did get one co worker interested enough that he created an account to join in on a contest. He WON a PS4… but then the fine print says “You have to have had your User account before the contest start date”, so he eliminated himself. womp womp… He had a good attitude about it though and does not blame anyone for the loss of the PS4.

I suppose you are all right, I have lead the horse to water… I guess they will eventually figure it out on their own.

Why sell it, it is free.

Simply making sure they know Spiceworks exists is probably all you can do for someone who isn’t ready to jump-in with two feet.

At least then when they run into problem and need answers hopefully they’ll remember this place is an option and come to check it out. Once the Spiceworks Community gets them out of a problem they’ll be hooked.

Start using the helpdesk. Eventually, something on the “in the community” section on the right hand side will get their attention - that’s what got me started.

I am not sure if that is bacon or a chunk of bark in the picture above, but either way I am now hungry and a little bit thirsty.

Love that the feature photo is whisk(e)y and bacon (though I’d prefer some http://www.woodinvillewhiskeyco.com/ or Shop Our Products | High West Whiskey ).

As far as the pitch to IT friends, I know what you mean. All I can say is, you can lead a horse to water…

I gave up on pretty much any other forum but this one… the Spiceworks Community is so stinking responsive I can’t even refill my coffee mug before there’s a reply to some stupid question I had to post… But I’ve also pretty much given up on trying to get others interested as well… as has been said, you can lead a horse to water, but…

You don’t want too many friends and co-workers on here because you can’t vent or talk trash as freely.

Wait till they are about to have a nervous breakdown following a major IT related disaster and then just before they crash you save them and tell them with the help of more then 1000000 IT pro’s it would have been solved a decade before it occurred… And don’t forget to spread Yoda’s wise words amongst your friends “The Bacon is strong with this One”
