this is a server i should soon have the ability to turn into a VM Host.

the question is, can i buy non eec memory for this? what are the cons to doing so. i understand the difference between eec and non eec ram, but dont want to kill this machine or anything if i choose to spend a few hundred bucks vs a few thousand.

I’d still get ECC, but would get 3rd party memory like Kingston and whatnot.

I always go to crucial.com and select the make/model of the server to ensure I get the correct RAM for servers.

When we bought our HP servers to be out ESX hosts we got them with the least amount of memory and then bought Kingston to the desired amount so they were all matched. Any aftermarket brand (whithin reason) should be fine to save you $$ over Dell branded memory.

I’ve been looking at memory for similar models of machines and found kingston and crucial to be just as expensive as dell memory. That was going with manufactuer recommendations and using the various tools to find compatiable memory. Seemed grossly expensive any way you go about it.

We usually scan with Crucial scanner, get the part number and then shop at Amazon for a better deal…

this is off crucial. seems a bit much for 8gb

$220 at Amazon. thanks for the tip!

If that is the case then I would go with Dell memory. When we bought ours it was hundreds of dollars difference per stick between HP and Kingston.

My recommendation to your question about non-ECC vs. ECC is to buy what is supposed to be there. ECC in servers is WAY more important than in desktops and if you are going to be using this as a host for VM’s then it will be even more important.

CDW has some for about that price too. I would personally prefer buying from them rather than Amazon.

could one of you verify i am able to turn this into a dedicated VM Machine? want to be 100% positive of this

Kingston part# KTD-WS667/8G priced at $238 at Provantage.com

this is Crucial memory. might as well get this for $20 cheaper, no? probably going to get 24gb to start

To see if you can install ESX on it.

I’m not sure about a Hyper-V compatibility guide.

Yeah, you’re probably going to have to stick with ECC memory, although as mentioned by everyone above it doesn’t have to be Dell ECC memory.

ordered 16gb to start and will order as needed. thanks for the help.
