I just did some windows updates on my hyper-v installation (the hypervisor itself, not the VMs). Now I can’t get back into it. The console comes up if I plug directly into the machine and I have network connectivity from there ( I can ping other machines on my network and the internet). However, I cannot ping the hypervisor from other machines and I cannot connect with the Hyper-V Manager.

I’ve tried re-allowing remote management through sconfig on the console. I don’t know what else to try.

Any help would be appreciated.

{"@type":"Person
{"@type":"Answer

I got it!

After searching a while on Microsoft forums…

I logged on to my workstation with the same username/password combination as the hyper-v server. I got further along in the connection. But I still couldn’t ‘see’ the VMs.

Made a change to the DCOM security on my local workstation to enable '‘remote access’ for the Everyone group. Got this from Microsoft. I don’t know why, but it worked!!!

Now I can manage my VM’s from my local workstation through Hyper-V Manager like I used to.

I still don’t know for sure why it quit working. It had to be something to do with the updates. There were many and I applied them all at once. I guess I learned my lesson! I’m just glad it’s all back now!!

Thanks for all your help!

{"@type":"Person
[{"@type":"Answer

Anything in the event log?

Which updates did you install?

Also you are able to RDp to the Hyper-V server, right? Are the VMs running fine and can you RDP to them?

{"@type":"Person
mel9484
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/mel9484"}},{"@type":"Answer

I’m still trying to figure out how to access the event logs on the hyper-v server. I can attach to it in Computer Management. But, security is stopping me from seeing anything.

I can RDP into the the Hyper-V server. I hadn’t thought about trying that. It doesn’t really give me anything more than sitting in front of the physcial machine, though. Except that it’s more comfortable!

None of the VMs seem to be working anymore.

Is there a way to manage the VMs from the console/RDP session?

{"@type":"Person
keneisman
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/keneisman"}},{"@type":"Answer

We have Hyper-V here and I merely RDP to VMs as any other server. One question though, when you are physically in front of the machine and logged into the Hyper-V, what is the state of the VMs; do they still show up as “Running” or something like critical or something else? Are you able to log into the VMs through the Hyper-V?

{"@type":"Person
mel9484
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/mel9484"}},{"@type":"Answer

Ken,

Are you using Hyper-V Server 2008 R2? None-the-less, it appears as if the updates possibly either enabled your firewall if you had it disabled, or may have altered configurations that you may have applied.

Are you using VMM to manage your VM environment? This could also be a DNS issue where you have multiple entries for the VM host (multiple NICs) and VMM or Hyper-V Manager is having issues resolving the host.

{"@type":"Person
john2688
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/john2688"}},{"@type":"Answer

I don’t know how to look at the state of the VMs when I’m in front of the machine. All I have are cmd windows and the sconfig menu.

When the VM’s work, I RDP into them, too. They weren’t running, though.

I couldn’t connect to the hyper-v server through the Hyper-V Manager at all.

{"@type":"Person
keneisman
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/keneisman"}}]}}
