Maybe check for unlinked data as in some cases, the file system may still contain the data, but it’s no longer linked correctly due to the revert action. This is more of a long shot and typically more applicable to deleted files rather than a system revert, but it’s worth mentioning. Sometimes, systems or applications create temporary backups or logs that might not be immediately apparent. Review your system and application logs to see if there’s any mention of automated backups or temporary files that could contain your data.

Definitley look into a data recovery tool as they can come in clutch in times like this. Unfortunately, without a pre-existing backup or snapshot made before the revert action, the chances of recovering the data are not high. However, exploring the options mentioned above is your best course of action at this point

{"@type":"Person
stefan-pulseway
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/stefan-pulseway"}},{"@type":"Answer

With no prior backups or recovery points to go from best option is data recovery tools above. It is has done a full revert I’ll be surprised if a recovery tool will work.

If there’s no luck it could be best to ensure follow 1-2-3 policy in regards to have a minimum of 1 backup type to having 3 backup types as a maximum to ensure you have proper data retention. Currently this might not be something you can adopt at the moment but something for consideration in the future.

{"@type":"Person
spiceuser-echfp
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/spiceuser-echfp"}},{"@type":"Answer

Having an active checkpoint for almost 5 years is against any possible best practices. As for your problem, even if you are able to find or recover dropped AVHD/AVHDX files, you won’t be able to merge them into your primary VHD/VHDX disk file since your VM was running and already made changes to the original virtual disk which makes it impossible (or very risky) to merge the checkpoint.

{"@type":"Person
supaplex-starwind
https://community.spiceworks.com/u/supaplex-starwind"}}]}}
