Imangine rebuilding your IT environment from scratch, which key tools would you choose in building the perfect IT setup? Think of an IT department with no legacy systems, no outdated software. Which tools would be must haves?

I’m run nothing On-Prem, so the perfect building could be smaller. The money saved on rent and utilities can be put into the IT budget.

Laptop and a trusted team of IT professionals to discuss how this should look. I did not build the environment myself. And as I continue to learn more about it, I feel that it would be worthwhile to create a detailed and well thought out plan before starting anything.

I did build the entire environment myself - including terminating the network cables. If I needed to do it all again (DR) then the non-IT specific tool I couldn’t do without would be a head torch (and my glasses these days
)
Going on day-to-day, the one tool that is always* with me is my multi-tool made by Gerber - I carry it everywhere and often find a use for the pliers, cutters, blade as well as the screw drivers - it really is a useful multi-tool - not perfect for every job, but it usually allows me to do an unexpected job without going back to get other kit.
*I say always, obviously not through the airport - it has to go in my case for those trips …
nb I have been asked by the Police why I have a knife in my pocket - it’s not a knife, it’s a multi-tool and I have it precisely because it’s a multi-tool and very useful to have.

Thanks for your insights. The tech you mentioned is a great start and readily available! For the first part you might want to try: Events and Community | Scotch + Bacon Hospitality Group

Whoa, totally cloud driven, nice! Maybe WiFi upgrades and an Espresso machine without denting the budget?

Great advice! Giving IT pros carte blanche could overwhelm the team.

Ah yes, the multi-tool, it should be in every IT department on earth! Also known as the MacGyver tool. Very useful indeed.

Are we imagining a fantasy world? I don’t think any such environment exists. But if it did, I’d go WFH and Cloud everything . The best part is no part.
PowerShell should be the obvious answer for those of us with a Windows environment, but I’ll assume that’s a given since it comes with Windows and Windows Server. The next number one tool I’d choose is the full package Intune license with the remote desktop support plugins added. That covers 90% of what I’d need to manage everything in the environment.
Great idea! How would you image the end-user devices? I guess AI could take over some of the workload.

A fully integrated MS shop. Awesome!

I would either use something like Intune/Autopilot, or have the OEM pre-image the PCs with a custom image prior to shipping. I mean, in this imaginary, all new, budget unlimited universe

In keeping with no On-Prem, all staff devices would be equipped with 5G/LTE capability, so no need for network hardware on site. As I am feeling masochistic towards my end users, the only staff devices will be Samsung Galaxy S handsets/tablets with DeX capability, so I won’t have to support Windows or macOS either. That way I can purchase two coffee machines.
