Just wanted to share my excitement with you lot. Having survived my first 6.5months in the industry at a small MSP, I’ve now been offered (and accepted) a position at an educational IT provider on better money with a company vehicle and amazing training opportunities.

Within a year they want me to have my A+ and Network+. I love studying so I don’t think that’ll be hard for me. I’m excited about moving past that and getting stuck in to Security+.

Right now I’m really feeling that I want to maybe make a progression towards working in infosec within the next 5-10 years so this is an amazing opportunity to learn all I can on company dime.

I hope you’re all having a great day!

First I like to tell you congratulations. Secondly, I think you’re starting off on solid footing since the job requires you to obtain those certifications this would be a good time for you to map out your career in conjunction with the job and beyond. Possibly being compensated as you further your training.

Congrats! It’s such a wonderful opportunity, not many companies now pay for the training course of employees. Wish all the best for your career!

Take a moment and look at your post. What made you happy in the new job that you didn’t get before? The new company is investing in you. They believe in you and are backing that with education, and you said you like to learn so it sounds like a great fit. Take advantage of that both from the perspective of rewarding their belief and increasing your own self-esteem. Then step back and look again. Did you get what you want, or were their choices too limited to really fulfill your bucket list? What does your boss say in the employee review that reinforces your employment choice? Question everything. You might want to copy your post and review it annually as a reminder of what drove you to make this choice. BTW, while my current employer made no specific training goals, they simply provided fascinating tasks that required research into areas I’ve never dealt with after 42 years in IT. They make the job interesting, and in my old age (65) I find no reason to retire again. Like you, it’s a good fit because they met my personal goals with enthusiasm. I mentioned last year that I would retire when I’m 94 because after 30 years I get an extra week of vacation, and I think they believe me

Good on you there! Just remember that what you do is not who you are and make sure you take the time away from work and reading to have a life. Maintaining a balance is tough in this industry because some of us are lucky enough to “play” with awesome “toys” every day. Don’t let the job be your life but keep enjoying what you are doing! As was said already, have a roadmap for where YOU want to go, not where this specific company wants you to go.

Yay!! (Insert happy dance here).

A+/Network+ aren’t all that difficult if you study up (of course I took them a couple decades ago). I remember during my Network+ exam thinking: “When are they going to get to the hard questions?” Don’t take them lightly, but don’t stress too much.

Never stop learning. Strive to know one thing each day you didn’t when you woke up.

Keep in mind that ultimately success in your job comes when your efforts help others succeed in theirs by having the systems and data they need available to do what they need to do.

Keep chasing the dream. There is a great line from the movie Leap!: “If you never leap, you will never know what it is to fly.”

Congrats! How was the MSP?

What kind of stuff did you do at the MSP job?

Would you still class yourself as an IT junior or pro?
